Character
Name: Chie Satonaka
Series: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Timeline: post-game
Canon Resource Links: P4 on Wikipedia, P4 on Megami Tensei Wiki, Chie on MT Wiki

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality:

When Souji Seta moved to Inaba at the beginning of Persona 4, one of the first friends he made was a cheerful tomboy named Chie Satonaka. Chie quickly gets roped into Souji's discovery of the TV world, and once the murders start and Yukiko is kidnapped, she insists on joining in the fight, no matter the possible danger to herself. She's there with Souji and the Investigation Team from beginning to end, always ready to get out onto the front line and kick some Shadows into the stratosphere. And at the same time, she trains with Souji and gets a bit more in touch with herself, with her reasons for fighting and her friendship with Yukiko.

Chie is outgoing and friendly, saving Souji from a teacher's lecture early on. She's even a self-proclaimed heroine of justice. She loves martial arts, training herself in a purely kick-based style and watching Bruce Lee movies rabidly. (A bit of conversation reveals that she even once got a challenge letter in her locker, and won the fight, naturally.) She's energetic, loves to eat steak, has an okay relationship with her parents... But really, compared to the other girls on the Investigation Team -- a popular heiress, a famous idol, and a crossdressing detective -- Chie is the most normal of the bunch. She'd like to be a little more feminine than she is, but she doesn't let it get her down.

Chie's best friend is Yukiko Amagi, the aforementioned heiress to the Amagi Inn. They've been close friends since their childhood, when Chie offered to take in a stray dog that Yukiko's parents wouldn't allow her to adopt. When Souji arrived, their relationship was on a bit of a rocky stretch; they were both feeling overly possessive and jealous of each other, but unable to admit it to themselves. Having to face their Shadows helped them to get over this hurdle, though, and now the two girls are closer than ever. Yukiko is pretty much Chie's most important person, and while she would go to great lengths for any of her friends, for Yukiko most of all she would do almost anything.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Chie is extremely athletic and energetic, which comes from training in martial arts for a good portion of her life. The tough work of traveling through Johto will be one of the least troubling aspects of her journey.
+ She's upbeat and optimistic under ordinary circumstances. It doesn't take a lot to get her annoyed or upset, but at the same time she bounces back pretty easily.
+ Once you befriend her, you've made a friend for life. That's not to say she won't tease or kick you if she has to, but when it comes down to it, she'll stick up for you.
+ She'll stick up for just about anyone, really. Chie hates to see injustice unpunished -- she's planning to become a police officer back home.
+ She's especially protective of her friends. If you harm someone she's close to, be prepared to be kicked in the most painful places she can find.

- She's especially protective of her friends. Some might say too protective, in fact. Even by the end of the game, she's still a little reluctant to see Yukiko on the battlefield -- not because she doesn't think Yukiko's capable! Just because she hates to see her get hurt.
- Chie is impulsive and stubborn. Once she's made a decision, it's not easy to get her to change her mind.
- She also has a bit of a temper. She's been known to respond to relatively minor slights with a kick to the groin (hi Yosuke).
- She still has some issues with her self-confidence. She has a much easier seeing other people's good points than her own.
- She cannot cook. The best thing you can say about her cooking skill is that it doesn't kill people when she's not collaborating with Yukiko. It just tastes terrible.
- She can be a bit credulous at times. She takes the rumor about the supernatural "Midnight Channel" for truth before she's even tested it.
- She's not very book smart. It's only thanks to Yukiko's help that she manages to keep up in school. She won't be cracking open the trainer's handbook for a while, that's for sure.

First Person Sample:

[The video feed clicks in to show Chie leaning against a tree. She's biting her lip, looking exhausted and a little worried.] Hello? Uh, I thought I should probably update everybody on how things are going. I think we're almost to... Cherrygrove, right? [She blows out a puff of air, drooping a little.] The traveling could be going better, though. We stopped early for the night 'cause he was so... See, we ran into some Pokémon that looked like a big owl, and I think it was a lot higher level than everything else we've fought...

[Chie turns her Pokégear to show her Tyrogue, who's curled up by a campfire looking sore.] I dunno why, but that bird's beak hurt him a lot for some reason. And then this stupid idiot wouldn't back down, no matter how much damage he took! [Despite her words, it's obvious that she's concerned about her partner.] If this keeps up, I'll end up running out of Potions.

[The video returns to Chie's face.] Anyway, I'm gonna try to take it a little easier 'til we get to Cherrygrove and I can pick up some more supplies. I just don't know if he's gonna cooperate. I swear, I got the most stubborn Pokémon out there. Alright, later!

Third Person Sample:

Chie thought she was finally managing to get the hang of her Pokégear. Really, it was just like a cell phone, wasn't it? Except she'd never had a cell phone with so many different functions. It had a map, a radio, not just a phone but a video phone... And something called a Pokédex. Apparently she could scan the weird creatures she ran into, and it would give her information about them. "Like having a portable Rise-chan," she laughed to herself.

"Ty, Tyrogue!"

Speaking of weird creatures... Chie glanced down at the Tyrogue who was walking at her side. He was scowling up at her with an impatient expression. "Oh, come on," she muttered. She'd only had to have him for a day or so to know exactly why he was upset. "We can't be fighting all the time, or we'll never catch up to Yukiko and the others!"

The Tyrogue pouted and crossed his arms, and Chie just shook her head. She understood what he wanted, but she didn't know why. Experimentally she hit the button for the Pokédex, but that was no help: "Tyrogue become stressed out if they do not get to train every day. To make itself stronger, it keeps on fighting even if it loses." Nothing she hadn't already seen for herself.

Well, there was nothing for it. She was just gonna have to ask. "Hey, we're taking a break!" she told the Tyrogue, receiving a squawk of disbelief in return. She took a seat on a tree stump next to the path, and her Pokémon followed after, repeating the handful of syllables he knew in a demanding tone.

"Alright, look," Chie finally said. "I understand you want to get stronger, and that's fine! But I gotta ask you... What do you wanna be stronger for?" He stared up at her, brow furrowed in confusion. "Is it just for the sake of being strong? Do you like fighting? Do you like hurting other Pokémon? 'Cause, well..."

She leaned forward, chin resting on her hands as she thought back. "Back home, before I met Souji-kun, before all that stuff with the murders happened..." The Tyrogue looked a little startled at this, but she kept going. "I kinda... lost track of myself. I was training all the time, but... I'd forgotten why. It was thanks to him that I finally remembered. It's not about how strong you are... It's about what you do with your strength. It's about protecting the people you care about, and stopping anybody who uses their strength to be cruel."

Chie stopped, feeling her face flush a little. She'd kinda started giving a speech there, hadn't she? "Well, that's what I think, anyway! So, uh... what do you say? I can train you, but you've gotta promise you'll find a good way to use your strength. Can you handle that?"

The Tyrogue stared at the grass for a few seconds, obviously giving this some serious thought. Finally he looked back up at her, impatience gone from his face and replaced with... could it be respect? "Rogue," he said, with a quick nod.

Chie grinned and punched her palm. "That's just what I wanted to hear!" She leapt to her feet, beckoning the Tyrogue to follow. "C'mon, we can get a few more fights in before the sun sets. And once we make camp, I'll start teaching you some of my kicks. Sound good?"

"Tyrogue!" came the enthusiastic reply, and Chie laughed. This partnership just might work out after all.
