A single tone is actually a combination of notes. Multiple notes sound sympathetically (by mathematical relation) to a single note. A string plays a pitch at 60 hertz (60 vibrations per second, 60 being simply for the sake of explanation). That string halved and played again vibrates at 120 hertz, an octave higher.
