Death Voices

So John Oliver has a new comedy special called: Terrifying Times and I saw like a 40 minute cut of it on ON DEMAND and it is a must watched for everyone. I have some exciting news to post here as my dabbling in the livejournal community has lead me to use it as a means of pimping my shit and by shit I mean comics. Me, Jeff, and Mueller have created ( Read more... )

If you actually read those arguments correctly, you'll find that they're not claiming white peoples aren't allowed to celebrate other culture differences and/or protect the planet. Plenty of white people are perfectly capable of this feat (though apparently not enough to stop most of the atrocities to this planet and the human and non-human life on it). It is more of a critique on the delivery of the message. They ask, "why can't the indigenous Na'vi peoples rise up against these industrial capitalist monsters, gather the support of their planet and all living creatures on it to fight and destroy them?" Why does there need to be a man from the dominant culture to (only sort of) fall in love with the new culture and be the sole reason the peoples claim victory? Wouldn't the message be more poignant, more powerful if the ones who are being wronged banded together through their common adoration and intense connection to the planet they depend on? Why do they need an outsider to be their hero? Does that mean us who are fighting the ( ... )

I've read all those internet arguments correctly from both the left and the right. As stated I plan on going more in depth with this on my blog www.novistry.com/comics but here's some responses to your ( ... )

Everyone who lives within this dominant culture is responsible for the destruction of the planet if they're not trying any way to fight back. Of course corporations and government are the main drivers of the destruction but because we've been brainwashed to think we need cars, telephones, jobs, etc. to survive in this world. All we need are the ecosystems and organisms that have been here since we evolved. Because we appeared on this planet doing what every other creature did to survive - live within the ecological system. Abandoning that abandons all life. I don't really care if it needed to make more "money" so they put that character in. Did you also read the stories about how James Cameron needed the CGI Na'vi girl to be "fuckable"? It's our whole fucked up culture and I was merely making that observation. It's not a revolutionary or poignant movie. If it gets some people to wake up to the destruction, then that's good, but it didn't go far enough.

It seemed like it showed that people could lived with out technology to me since Sully was perfectly happy without it. I actually got an all you can need it love kinda vibe. Plus of course the Na'vi girl had to be cute do you want to see him fall in love with an insect like thing like in Distric 9?
Actually that would be fucking hysterical lol.....

Yes of course it didn't go far enough any movie that shows people having to live with hierarchy isn't going to far enough but it seemed like it went right along side those anti-civ views of yours.

Yeah, so don't anonymously comment on my livejournal disagreeing with me when I was saying that I wish it did go far enough. That it bothered me in that way.

I don't really know why you said "those anti-civ views of yours". I believe in ecology and the connectedness of life and I am against anything that attempts to destroy it or live outside of it. Industrial civilization does this and does it profoundly and successfully. Fortunately for me, we simply can't live by exploiting massive resources forever - even a technotopia world which you seem to support wouldn't work because it still follows the same premise that humans are separate from the natural world and don't actually need it (that 'technology' will somehow save us). Anything that supports the current mindset of producing for production's sake (do we need electricity to survive? do we need dance-powered night clubs to survive? do we need disposable bottles of Coca Cola that are then recycled to survive? etc.) will be business as usual for our culture ( ... )

Well I'm gonna assume your Laura since you're the only one I know who has such negative things to say about technology she uses everyday. If it's really as horrible as you say it is perhaps you should communicate by smoke signals?

Anyway this isn't your journal and my comments about avatar were against the irrationality of americans. And I called them your anti-civ views because well I don't believe in any of this "technology is unsustainable" stuff it's a distraction from the real problem which is hierarchy and even if you're right those kind of failed ideas will still permeate which is my main concern.

I didn't actually read anything past your little wal-mart jab because honestly that was enough to show there's nothing of worth in your arguments. You're a hypocrite and a fake and none of your actions back up what you claim to believe just like all of you other primitivists outside the unabomber. Now get the fuck off my journal.
