007: On Supernatural, Problematic Elements, Writing SNAFUs, and Me

My thing with Supernatural is that I see there are problematic elements and I just don't care.

I see the narrative mishaps and hiccups, and I still don't care.

I see the exclusion of groups, and the victimization of people, and the really weird social assumptions, and nothing nothing nothing ruins it for me ( Read more... )

<3 I get weirdly defensive of Supernatural because it seems so common for people to just go "UGH SUPERNATURAL. IT'S SO PROBLEMATIC! THEY SCREWED UP THE NARRATIVE SOOOO MANY TIMES!" and yet it's ok to just leave the conversation at that? Nobody ever goes on to say why it's problematic or where they've screwed up! And if they do I'm always like "you missed all the context there" or "now you're just being butthurt that they didn't write your fanfic or your point of view or some other agenda that you had." Because, at least narratively over the long haul, I very honestly don't see any major problems? But, again, that might be because I have certain tropes that I despise and they have (so far, and I trust they always will) willfully avoided every single one.

Exactly, ugh. I mean, sure there are some narratives that could've been better but like what show isn't like that? Nothing ever goes according to anyone's little perfect brain plan and like now there's this ridiculous petition going around to keep Misha a main cast member for season 9 and ugh people just stop let it happen as it happens, you know?

UGH, I avoid that fandom like the PLAGUE. For one thing, the current showrunner(s) are in love with Castiel's character. For another THEY HAVE THE THING PLANNED OUT UNTIL SEASON 10. If Cas is going to be there they already know it and no dumb petition will change that. If Misha has other contractual obligations, that's a factor too. Like, I don't understand how people don't get that THESE ARE TV ACTORS WITH REAL LIVES AND OTHER WORK. And sometimes the availability of an actor makes a real impact on the story. I'm pretty sure Misha wasn't into much of S7 because he was WORKING ON OTHER THINGS, not because they were like "um, Misha, we're killing your char BAI." When does that even HAPPEN on Supernatural? Like, who the fuck stays dead? *Bobby*shecoughsunderherbreath*OH WAIT NO, he was a GHOST ( ... )
