How much is your house worth?

We live in a "3 bedroom" (it's actually one and two halfs! =D) 1.5 bath, 1100 sf crappy older house with extensive termite damage, in an "eh" neighborhood. It's not in the ghetto, but it is right next door. ;-> According to Yahoo (via Zillow) the property is worth $346K ( Read more... )

Another reason why we moved to Colorado.

I thought housing prices were nuts in Colorado too? Paying for the beautiful view, the way we pay for the sunshine and beaches in So-Cali?

We've talked about relo; neither of us wants to so we keep hanging on. There are limits though. If we do bounce, it'll probably be to either Arizona or Utah, where we have some connects, and where the cost of living is more affordable.

I'm practically dying in the heat -- if we were in Yuma, we would want AC, so that'd be an added expense -- but overall, one can live much better with much less. But, you know...ugh!...it's Yuma! :o

Houses aren't exactly cheap here, but they are no where near California prices, and there are plenty of decent, affordable housing.

meh. FWIW, I just input the address of the house we sold last summer (wooo!) into the yahoo/zillow site, and it's telling me the correct assessed value, but says the house last changed hands in 2004...which would have come as a great surprise to both of us as we were living there at the time. It doesn't have our current house in the database at all, despite our having bought it in 2007 and that information having appeared in the property transfers section of the local newspaper.

Aside from that, I agree that the Cali real estate scene has more in common with a martini-and-cocaine party than it does with real life. As does the real estate scene in Boston. I can understand the inflated values in Manhattan because it's, well, Manhattan. Same for Paris, etc. But Boston? The houses are small, run-down, disgusting condition, and tremendously expensive. And then you're in...Boston. woo.

But I thought there were a bunch of awesome breweries in Boston ... that's gotta count for something! :D

Well, Zillo thinks my house is worth about 1/3 of what I paid for it. So for me, it feels like the sky IS falling. :-(

Well, while the prices were fairly spot-on for me, other folks who've played with it say for them, not so much. So don't worry about it, unless you've got an appraiser telling you the same thing.

If it weren't for permits and regs, we could build a much better house ourselves. I don't mean "log cabin" type thing -- plumbing, wiring, foundations, the whole "11 yards." I think Hel and I might have both been accidentally born in the wrong decade/century/millennium sometimes, y'know? ;->
