Prompt: Dean and Sam watch a certain movie...
This takes place between Season Three episodes: The Kids are Alright and Bad Day at Black Rock
“What the hell was that?” Dean asked.
Sam blinked a few times and looked over to him “What?”
Dean shot up from the motel bed “That” he said gesturing towards the television “What was that crap?”
“The movie?” Sam asked with a confused look on his face.
“No Sam” Dean said sarcastically “That steaming pile of horse crap we just saw. Calling it a movie is insulting movies everywhere. And I am including Ernest Goes to Camp in that category as well.”
Sam cracked a small grin “It wasn’t that bad.”
Dean actually did a double take for a moment “What? What?” he demanded louder “Were we watching the same movie?”
Sam shrugged “Come on Dean…what was so bad?”
Dean ran a hand though his hair as he began to pace the room “Bad? Bad doesn’t cover it Sammy. If it was just bad I would have just nodded off. If it was just bad I wouldn’t want to go out and punch whoever made that damn thing in the mouth. Bad is Episode One. Bad is every Eddie Murphy movie after Beverly Hills Cop 2. Bad is anything Reese Witherspoon is in. This? This was garbage.”
Sam made a contemplative look “I am sensing you didn’t like it Dean…but I am not sure…”
Dean showed Sam just how much he didn’t like it with one finger and said “You can’t be saying you liked it.”
Sam shrugged “It was ok.”
Dean actually stared at him open mouthed for a few moments. He came back and sat down on the edge of his bed and stared across to Sam “Ok? Are you serious?”
Sam shrugged again.
“So you have no problem that these vampires…were in high school? And they drank animal blood…”
“But that’s kind of real.” Sam interjected, recalling that not every vampire the brothers had met were killers.
“Sparkle? Sparkly vampires are not the least bit real.” Dean practically spat “Sparkle in the sunlight?” he said under his breath “Come on! And don’t even get me started on that little punk.”
“Edward?” Sam asked.
Dean looked up at him with serious eyes “That was not Edward.”
Sam cocked his head with a slight smile “How would you know who Edward was?”
Dean looked away quickly “I guess that Edward is supposed to be that whole…I don’t know” he gestured with his hands “image of perfection and beauty. Not some skinny, heroin looking freak who looked more like a stalker than some noble whatever.”
Sam’s eyes narrowed as he continued to listen.
“Edward should be something…prettier I guess. Something almost unreal in looks.” he jerked his head towards the TV set “That punk looked like a crack head in an after school special.”
After a moment of silence Sam said “You read the books.”
Dean shot him a glance and said too quickly “What?” he tried to laugh “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Sam’s eyes were wide “YOU read Twilight?”
“I didn’t say that.” Dean said not making eye contact with Sam.
“Yeah but you aren’t denying it either.” Sam said rising off the bed “When in the hell did you have time to read?”
Dean looked down and shuffled his feet but remained silent. Sam walked over to Dean’s side of the room “Where could you ever hide a book that size?”
Dean leapt towards Sam as he began to look under Dean’s pillow and bedding. Sam saw something under Dean’s pillow before his hand had covered it “Back off sasquatch.”
Sam grinned “You’re reading something now?” he said trying to move around Dean.
Dean moved around, almost planting himself on the pillow “Fuck off Sam!” he barked.
“Come on Dean” he said moving quickly to his left and then lurching right as Dean followed the fake out. As Dean fell over Sam grabbed the pillow and almost flipped Dean off the bed as he pulled it free. Dean cursed as he saw Sam grab the book and take a few steps back.
“Give that back bitch!” he said scrambling to his feet.
“My brother, the ultra macho Dean Winchester reads Twilight?” Sam said holding the book well above his head.
“It’s about vampires!” Dean shouted, trying to reach for the book in vain.
“Sparkly vampires” Sam said smiling “You read a book about sparkly vampires?”
“It’s more than that.” Dean said jumping up with a grasp.
“It’s a love story.” Sam said mockingly “Does Dean like the vampire love story?”
Dean’s knee moved faster than Sam’s eyes as it flew upwards and collided with Sam’s crotch. Sam felt the breath fly out of him as he dropped the books and cover himself. He saw the room tilt slightly as Dean caught the book and tossed it on the bed. He heard Dean say “Do not make fun of Edward and Bella.” If Sam wasn’t in such pain at the moment he might have laughed at the severity of the statement. Instead he stumbled back to his bed and sat down.
After a few minutes of deep breaths Sam said through gritted teeth “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Dean said nothing as he handed him a can of beer, still ice cold from the cooler they had brought in from the Impala. Sam took it and placed the can in his lap. “Sorry bout that.” Dean said mumbling.
“You kicked me in the nuts.” Sam growled.
“It wasn’t that hard.” Dean said.
“Hard enough.” Sam argued adjusting the can.
Dean couldn’t argue with that and opened the other can for himself. After a few seconds he said “Sorry”
Sam looked up at Dean with an odd look “When did you find time to read those books?”
Dean shrugged “When you were in the shower, when I took off to get a beer…when you nod off first sometimes. Whenever I could I guess.” Dean said not looking at him “It’s not like we are joined at the hip you know.”
Sam was surprised; he thought he knew everything there was to know about his brother. But here he was forced to admit they still had secrets from each other. “And you liked them?”
Dean looked up with a glare, he wasn’t sure Sam was mocking him or not. But the look of sincerity on his little brother’s face showed he was really asking the question and not teasing him. With a nod he said “Yeah I like em.”
Sam shook his head in surprise “I would have never…why?” he asked interrupting himself.
“Why what?”
“Why do you like them?” Sam asked, needing to understand this small part of his brother for some reason.
Dean sat there and took another long swallow of his beer. The room was quiet as Sam waited for him to say something. He was about to ask again when Dean said “She loves a monster.” Sam closed his mouth. “There is this incredible girl.” Dean continued “And she could have anyone in the world. And she loves this monster.” he grew silent again “I don’t know.” he said sighing “I guess I just do.”
Sam sat there stunned. In a tentative voice he said “Dean…you aren’t a monster.”
“Aren’t I?” he asked raising an eyebrow “Isn’t that exactly what I am Sammy? I go around, scamming people with fake ID’s, lie to them, hustle them, sometimes over and over. I live for only killing things and if I didn’t have that…I don’t think I’d have anything.” he looked up at his brother “If that isn’t a monster I don’t know what is.” He looked away “It’s stupid anyways.”
Sam thought about it for a moment “Dean…you will find someone.”
“Whatever” he said.
“Seriously Dean, not everyone is Cassie.” he said.
Dean looked up at the sound of her name for a moment and Sam thought he might get decked for a moment. After a second he dropped his gaze and said “Not the point.”
Sam adjusted the can again and finally asked “What happened with Lisa?”Dean didn’t even glance up as Sam asked again “Dean? What did Lisa say when you left?”
Dean continued to study his boot and said “Nothing. She didn’t say anything.”
Sam moved the beer aside and moved over next to Dean “Dean…what did she say?”
Dean continued to burn a hole in his boot and in a small voice said “She said I could stay if I wanted.”
Sam’s head jerked back in shock “She did? Well then why…”
“Because I can’t stay Sam. I can’t. I can never be with someone like that. With her and Ben…that life. It isn’t for me.” he finished the beer “Besides what’s the point? Even if I stayed with her I’d just go and die on her in a year anyways.”
Sam put a hand around Dean’s shoulder “Dean…we’ll find a way to save you. We really will.”
Dean looked over to him “And? Even if we do Sammy, even if I don’t go to Hell…who is going to love a monster like me?”
Sam didn’t know what to say as he sat there and watched the anguish in his brother’s eyes. After a few seconds Dean stood up “Anyways…no big deal. I just like the books.” He crushed and tossed the can into the trash “So go ahead…lay into me. Get it over with.” he said holding his arms out to his side.
Sam sat there and contemplated it and asked “So what should Edward look like?”
Dean blinked a few times in confusion “What?”
“You said that guy isn’t Edward…so what should Edward look like.”
Dean thought about it “Edward should be incredibly handsome. Something that is chiseled yet soft, handsome yet beautiful, almost god like in his perfection.” he explained.
“So who would you get to play Edward then?” Sam asked.
Dean smiled “Me of course? Who else could pull that definition off?”
Sam made a face and threw a pillow at Dean “You are delusional.”
Dean laughed as he batted the pillow away “Oh come on Sammy…you’re in the book too!”
Sam looked at him “And who am I supposed to be?”
“I always saw you as Jacob the dog boy. You know the guy who always loses to Edward?” he said with an evil grin.
“Dog boy?” Sam asked with a serious look.
“Arf arf.” Dean said, getting ready for it.
Sam stared for a moment and then rushed him with a tackle. The two brothers fell to the ground laughing as they wrestled each other back and forth. Sam was heartened to hear his brother’s laugh as they rolled around on the carpet hoping he could somehow chase the darkness from him somehow. He wasn’t worried, he was going to find a way to save Dean and he was sure there was someone out there for him.
There had to be.
