America is hard.
It is not an easy concept, nor will it ever be one. We were from inception a divided collection of people. But it was not our differences that we saw, it was the similarities. It was the things that we agreed, wanted, dreamt of that bound us together, not the things we disagreed on. America forces you to look at the things you do not believe in and defend them. It makes you sit side by side with people who disagree with makes you accept them as you would want them to accept you. America is hard, and it is hard on purpose.
We are stronger together than apart, we are stronger united than we ever will be divided and we are stronger because of our differences than because of our similarities. I put on a uniform and hid my sexual orientation to defend the very people who would take the right away from me and I did it gladly. I swore to defend this country against enemies foreign and domestic even though there were people who would never think I deserved the same rights as they had. I did this proudly and would do so again if asked, I do it because I am an American.
America is hard and that's ok. It should be hard, it should be challenging and it should be for everyone. Everyone. It is the first sentence, the very first one when we chose to cease being thirteen different colonies and started becoming on country. The very first sentence was. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The reason we had to say that is because that sentence is not true. We are not equal, we are not endowed with unalienable rights. We needed to say it out loud and to proclaim it not because it was true, but because we wanted it to be true.
America is hard because it goes against the very way that people believe. it flies in the inborn desire that we all possess to make the world better for US. America asks you to put aside what you need and asks you to make it better for all. For you, your family, your friends and then asks yo to do the same for people who don't agree with. It asks you to help the people who hate you, who talk against you and it asks you lend a hand to those who would try to silence your voice if they could. America is hard, it that's ok.
This was an ugly election and it is just going to get uglier I fear. We cannot let these things that divide us bring us down. We cannot let our own personal feelings get in the way of accepting everyone as equal. It's hard because until you have personally had someone try to take away your freedoms, you cannot imagine why taking someone else's is so bad.
America is hard, but that's ok. So am I, and I am willing to stick it out.
