That's good to hear. If you don't mind, can I ask why you just recently switched? Did you receive any extra benefits for using the MGIB as opposed to the Post 9/11 GI Bill?
Last I checked, they were still recommending that you pay into the MGIB if you had the option because there was some schooling (trade schools, I believe) that might be better under MGIB - also IIRC, the new GI Bill doesn't or didn't cover online schooling, only traditional schooling - I want to say that they're trying to change that, but I'm not sure if they DID or if they only PLAN to
( ... )
This is all really helpful, thank you! I thought about how that would work after I complete my undergrad, because I would definitely like to continue on, but it still seems like it's worth it to be getting the extra money for living and books/supplies. I'll have to look in to both a little more, though. Thanks again!
When you apply for benefits, you just simply check the box of the benefit you want.
I paid into the MGIB, and I'm currently using the Post 9/11 bill. The $1200 that you pay into it, will be paid back to you with your last stipend payment.
Are you planning on using it while you're in active duty, or when you get out? I don't know how it works for the Army, but while I was in the Navy, I just had to go to the Navy College "campus" and I could sign up to take classes there...and I would just have to pay for the books. This is great because you can save your GI Bill...
I'm definitely going to use the tuition assistance program we have first, which will pay for me to take classes (up for a certain amount, with a few other details) while I'm in. This was mostly me browsing for what I'm going to do after the military, if I don't reenlist. I didn't know it was that simple to switch, but that's a relief! Thank you.
TA is pretty good, $250/credit hour up to $4500 a year, which works out to 6 classes. Especially since some schools have book grants, which means the classes are FREE.
I finished up my bachelor's on TA and am planning to start my master's this fall.
So because I'm curious - are they going to give back the $1200 as benefits or are you going to get the $1200 cash (well, electronically)? I've heard some conflicting things on that.
It seems like a better option (I even applied for it), but right now, so many people are getting fucked by the Post 9/11 bill. They're having to wait MONTHS before even getting approved and even longer to get their payments. Makes me worried about getting out, since I have a month left..
Where you live makes a difference, too. If your state offers reduced or free tuition to veterans at state schools, you will want to run the numbers to see what gives you the most $$.
