Title: Seeing Double
Characters: Jack, Kai, Ragi, background Jack/Sky if you squint.
Rating: G
Jack ambled through the halls looking for Sky, in the vague hope of some Sky-baiting, which was always fun and could usually be relied on for kissing at the very least, providing he went about it the right way. If he didn't, though, he'd be sleeping alone tonight and after everything that had happened over the past couple of days, well, maybe he didn't want to sleep alone. At least, not tonight, anyway, so he'd just have to play things right, wouldn't he?
He turned the next corner and caught sight of a familiar figure in blue at the end of the corridor, only it was more of a grey-blue than the kind of blue Kai usually wore. "Hey!" he called, raising his voice so Kai would hear him, putting a burst of speed on to catch up. "Kai, man, you okay? Haven't seen much of you since you got back."
It had definitely been worrying, Kai disappearing twice in the space of two days and the Alliance had screwed Kai over more than once already, who knew what kind of damage they'd done this time. He still remembered the withdrawn ghost that wouldn't interact with anyone except Shirogane unless he had to and the thought of Kai returning to that was...
Why was Kai glaring at him like that?
"Oh for Gods' sakes," Kai said huffily and Jack felt his jaw dropping at the words coming out of Kai's mouth. Shirogane swore up and down that Kai could talk, that he just chose not to for the most part, but until now Jack hadn't believed him. "For the last time, it's Ragi, not Kai. We don't look all that much alike you know."
Jack stared some more, wondering what exactly the Alliance had done this time to...
Kai turned and the scowl - which had been pure Kai, no matter what the guy was saying - vanished, replaced by a cheerful smile as if it had never been there. "Hey, Kai," he said, "come explain this to your friend, will you? He's not getting it."
Much to Jack's surprise - and not a little consternation - Kai strolled around the corner, curious expression on his face that cleared when he spotted Jack, giving him a quick wave in greeting.
"There're two of you," Jack said slowly, pointing a totally not shaking finger in their direction. "Since when are there two of you?" Although this did explain the whole talking bit earlier; it had been, oh, what had he called himself again? Ragi? Yeah, that was it, Ragi, not Kai. Oh well, that meant he still had no evidence Shirogane wasn't trying to--
"Since a couple of days ago." And that was definitely Kai, Jack decided, because he wasn't the one he'd been talking to until now. "Well, I suppose you could say always, but we only found each other a couple of days ago, anyway."
"Tell him we don't look that alike," Ragi demanded, pointing an accusing finger in Jack's direction. "Everyone thinks I'm you and it's not like we're--"
"We kind of do," Kai interrupted with a shrug. "You know, with the whole 'twin' thing? And you'll probably get it a lot until everyone gets used to having you here."
"I never said I was staying."
Kai shrugged but Jack recognised that look even if this new twin didn't: that was Kai's 'humour him until he sees sense' smile and he covered a grin of his own by faking a coughing fit, wondering what odds he'd be able to get on Kai wearing Ragi down eventually. Of course, for that to happen, the fact that Kai had a twin would have to be public knowledge and while it would happen soon enough, Jack didn't really want to be the one spreading it around. Except for Sky, of course, he wasn't going to hide that from him.
"Anyway," Kai said cheerfully, grabbing hold of his brother's arm and tugging, "we have stuff to do, see you later Jack."
Jack nodded wordlessly as the two disappeared from sight with the accompanying soundtrack of "we don't look that much alike!" floating back round the corner. Alright, now he really did need to find Sky: he wanted someone to commiserate over weirdness with and Sky was just the guy for that.
