Title: Different Channels
Pairing: Hakariya Jin/Kamiya Gou
Rating: G
Gou Kamiya, Jin decided, was possibly the stubbornest, densest person he knew. "I'm telling you," he insisted, resisting the urge to tug on the guy's uniform jacket to get the lines right, "Sargain's a nutcase. He's completely mental."
Gou sighed and gave him a frustrated look. "And you say this because?"
"He was in here a few hours ago," Jin replied, giving the sergeant a quick glance over, wishing he could do something about how dull Starfleet uniforms were. While he would admit that it looked okay on Gou, his fingers still itched to get him into something decent in his civilian-wear, instead of the throwbacks to the 22nd century he usually wore. Gou was proving incredibly resistant, however Jin had never been one to back down from a sartorial challenge and Gou was one he couldn't leave alone. "You know how about half of Science is down with that bug they picked up from whatever planet we were on last?" Although 'bug' was putting it mildly, considering how it had devasted the Science staff.
Gou's eyebrows drew together. "You don't have to remind me," he said with a sigh. "Security's a few people down, too."
"Yeah, but not to the same extent," Jin pointed out. "Anyway, Sargain was bitching about how his deadlines won't be met and how the others will just have to work harder. They're on double shifts as it is, Gou, and I swear if you took blood from Samezu you'd get pure caffeine instead." He didn't envy that botany guy any, having to deal with a hyperactive Samezu Kai.
Jin occupied a unique position on the Sky Island; normally as a civilian he wouldn't have much access to, well, much of anything, but people from both sides of the Starfleet/civilian divide came to him for clothes and other assorted vanities and they all had a tendency to talk. As a result, there was precious little that went on that Jin didn't know about and right now a lot of people were getting very worked up about Sargain's constant drive to meet deadlines instead of focusing on the health and well-being of his scientists. If something wasn't done someone was going to snap and Jin didn't particularly want to be in the vicinity when they did.
"Science is a big department," Gou reminded him. "And their work is the reason we're out here in the first place. Of course it's important."
Jin felt like shaking him until some sense fell loose. "To this extent?" he asked impatiently. "Sargain doesn't give a damn about his people and they're starting to realise that. They're overworked, Gou, and something's got to give somewhere."
If talking to Gou - who, as part of Security could in theory do something about this - didn't do the trick he'd have to try talking to someone else, maybe Katie, if he could talk her into trying a couple of outfits that would knock Regis dead if he saw her in them. Still, he had faith that Gou couldn't possibly be as dense as he seemed and that he could at least mention it to the right people. Or something.
Gou gave him a searching look, then sighed. "Okay," he said reluctantly. "Okay, I'll keep an eye out. Satisfied?"
Not entirely, but it was better than nothing and who knew, maybe it would be enough. Too bad they couldn't do anything about Sargain, but he was a member of the Command Staff and how likely was it that Captain Shishi would even listen to someone so far down the foodchain. Okay, bad mental image. He didn't want to be on any foodchain that had Sargain as part of it. "It'll do," he conceded, then slung an arm around the man's shoulders, leading him towards the cupboards with his 'new' stock. "Now, about those shirts I was telling you about--"
