I didn't get around to posting this anywhere but my LJ, the other day, so here it is now:

Pieces.

1. Pieces - Sum 41
This track reminded me of Adam from the moment I saw the video. It's about being outside the perfect life, looking in. It just reminded me of Adam, and his detachment from his family, and convincing himself he didn't need anyone to be happy. I have it on virtually all my recent mixes, and it's obviously where the title for the fic came from.
2. Ocean Blue - Buffseeds
'Don't frown, I will take it if you will' - Jamie to Adam. This track is by my favourite band - sadly no longer with us, but can be found in a new form as
Iko. The track was originally for the singer's sister, who has been through a lot, and to whom he is very close. I know the band well, and this song has been my favourite from the start. It relates, in my head, to Adam's conflict over DADT, and their nightwatch liasons; and later to their roadtrip. At once both heart breaking and euphoric, this is a song of devotion, and trust and I love it with all my heart.
3. You & Me Song - The Wannadies
'Always when we fight, I try to make you laugh - I know you hate that' Jamie's childlike innocence over Adam's stoic caution. At once uplifting - another roadtrip track - but in this context, heartbreaking - because we all know how it ends...
4. Wait a Minute - My Vitriol
'Let's get just a little too proud...', 'So is it that we’re really on trial?/Nothing's ever gonna change our style' A song from my teens, and another band I knew back in the day. A song about success in a musical career, but bears many references to misguided belief in invincibility.
5. Remind Me - Royksopp
'We stayed outside 'til two, waiting for the light to come back...' & 'Brave men tell the truth' Memories of the goodtimes. Kansas. Seattle. Much that once was, is now lost... 'And every where I go, there's always something to remind me of another place and time. A love that travelled far and found me...'
6. Somewhere I Belong - Linkin Park
'I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real' The original title of the fic, back when it was a one-shot and began with the scene that will be be somewhere in the middle of chapter five. As much as I hate to admit it, I really like Linkin Park's singles, and this one in particular rings for Adam to me.
7. The Ghost of You - My Chemical Romance
'All the things that you never, ever told me/And all the smiles that are never gonna haunt me...You are never coming home, never coming home...' This song speaks volumes for itself, but if you have ever seen the video - a re-enactment of the WWII landings in France - you will see what about it reminds me of the boys, and makes me cry every time. My Gateworld sig is the cover art for this fanmix, emblazoned with lines from this song. It is one of the most Pieces!songs in my world. And MCR are one of my favourite bands.
8. Army Dreamers - Kate Bush
*Not technically Army, I know, but I quoted this song for chapter three and it always reminds me of the boys - and a play I was in recently, about the Accrington Pals, a battalion of soldiers from a small town in the north of England, who were decimated in the Great War. It's beautiful and tragic and has a fun-fair/carnival rhythm. I hope that one day someone will make a fan vid of the military boys on Atlantis, to this song.
9. You Were Right - Easyworld
Some more old mates... I never saw this song live, but I know the story behind it. Now, it just rings of loss, and sadness, and defeat. The chorus makes me think of Adam acknowledging that Jamie was right about loosening up and accepting their relationship as it was - even though the tone is ironic. Or you could look at it the other way: Jamie saying sorry to Adam for leaving the team, because look where it got them in the end... Or even, them versus the military - and the belief that gays and relationships in the military are a bad thing...
10. The Man With the Child In His Eyes - Kate Bush
The only artist to appear twice in the mix. This song was apparently about Kate's father, and was written in her early teens. To the rest of the world, it's a song about a lost love (possibly MIA at sea or in the war) returning in the 'spirit', or the fantasy thereof. Post-death, Adam. Of course.
11. Play Crack the Sky - Brand New
'They call 'Love is a risk - you'll always get hit out nowhere/by some wave, and end up on your own' & 'And I wish for one more day to give my love, and repay debts/But the morning finds our bodies washed up, twenty miles west' One of the saddest, most lost-sounding songs I own. It makes me sad and lonely to listen to, and makes me think of Adam maybe returning to Earth, or struggling on after he loses Jamie. It's the last song on Deja Entendu, and the last song on this fanmix, because it really is an ender and if you're not suicidal or crying by the time this album ends, you may as well stop reading Pieces right now...
