You know, I don't write in this thing nearly as much as I should. Reading back, I'm reminded that I actually like a lot of my writing, rather than cringing away from it. It also occurs that I should write about more than just SF&F Conventions, but since I'm about to just that again, such thoughts can join the ranks of other New Year's Day idiocies

And now I'm madly curious who the Big Name Editor and Sourcraut-Critic was...

And the BNE&C can remain nameless here. If you search hard enough, you could probably figure it out, but I've had my grump now and that will do.

Other people pick which sessions to go to based on who is listing as presenting or being on the panel.
I do this - it's not so much about seeing the BNAs as that there are some people (some fans, some BNAs, some writers/editors/etc who are probably not all that BN) who are interesting enough that any panel they're on will be worthwhile regardless of topic.
Conversely - I've been burned/bored enough times that if a topic interests me but I don't recognize any of the panellists - I may still go but I'll sit near the back where I can leave unobtrusively if it sucks.
I may have also surprised the odd BNA by exhibiting a lack of said squeeing on meeting themAs a firm believer in the notion that BNAs are also people, I'm sure it was either refreshing and/or unnoticeable (unless of course you were deliberately rude and snubbing in your non-squeeing but that sounds unlikely). I squee (and worse, because I'm fairly shy when interacting with new people, so the whole "make real conversation" is difficult) but I limit my squeeing to politely ( ... )

Also Wiscon is awesome.
I've been to two of them.
I suspect you'd also like World Fantasy Con, or things like Fourth Street. But in terms of travel bang-for-buck given the effort involved in going to an NA convention from Australia, Wiscon is a good bet. And Madison is a pretty university town with interesting places to do the tourist thing nearby, and thought the Madison airport is small, Chicago (with better connections) is only 2-3 hours away.

A strategy that I employed a number of times. Judging by the crowds at the back of the rooms, or on the edges of seats of rows, others were also thinking along the same lines. :)
One of the nice things about the academic sessions was that the vast majority were 30 minutes or less, allowing people like me to go to one I was particularly interested in and then sneak off to half of another thing.
...(unless of course you were deliberately rude and snubbing in your non-squeeing but that sounds unlikely).I really hope not! I was worried I had made the odd social misstep while at the con, but that turns out not to have been the issue I thought it may have been anyway. I would like to get to know one of the BNAs I was introduced to, but that seems unlikely, And at the time we were polite to each other but just lacking in anything ( ... )
