I was talking with a Muslim once, who said that he believed that God created sins to tempt us. I said I disagreed, and used the example of gluttony as a case where something is indeed very good (food), but when used to excess is bad (gluttony). I do understand what you are trying to say. When religion deteriorates into fanaticism, where religion causes the individual to defy social conventions, then it does become the opposite of what it was meant to be, as we have seen with 9/11, the shooting of doctors who perform abortions, and the like. I agree that religious extremism IS a deadly sin.

Religion does not have to promote violence to be a deadly sin. It can also blind people to the truth. It can divide families. It can promote bigotry and superstition instead of promoting harmony and wisdom.

Consider, is there any reason to want to tear the families of homosexuals apart, other than religiously inspired bigotry and superstition?
