Gravion - 1

Before I start this series of reviews I'd like to get something out in the open. I was never a big fan of Masami Obari. When I was younger I would buy his OVA stuff based on the cover and then be disappointed with the actual product. Yeah, his product has always been fanservice heavy, but something was always off. I mean, he clearly likes drawing ( Read more... )

This is one of the few times where I actually envy the Japanese. I'm sure THEY get proper commentaries on their disks.

You can relax. Japanese do not get proper commentaries on their disks either. There are some rare exceptions of course (Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex DVDs are loaded with addons), but usually it's just clean opening/closing sequences and promo. In case of Gravion you get action figures (DVD#1 - Luna, DVD#2 - Touga, DVD#3 - Mizuki, DVD#4 - Eiji, DVD#5 - Eina, DVD#6 - Leela) and 64-page comic, but no interviews and no commentaries. Plus each DVD has only two episodes for over $50 price!

Sometimes quality of Japanese DVDs are much better then U.S. ones (FLCL or "Oh! My Goddess OVAs", for example), but this is not a case with new shows (and Gravion is new show). Not much to envy relly...

Oh, I feel much better now.

You would think the Japanese would embrace the otaku culture (the ones mainly buying). I mean, a commentary gives an otaku more of a reason to buy instead of pirate!

They did. "Real otaku" will never even think about HK DVDs and will buy superexpensive domestic DVDs instead. And if you'll include commentary on DVD it'll be copied on HK DVD as well - so why bother ?

It's easier to create artificial shortage and exploit that: a lot of Japanese DVDs are "sold out" in few months so otaku are forced to buy DVDs fast while they are still available; box is included "for free" in first batch of DVDs and there are no way to buy it later (OK, you can buy it is specialized shops, but there are no guarantee); priced-down reissues are rarity thus otaku are not tempted to wait for it, etc.

And one more thing: japanese houses are tiny - there are quite literally no space to keep huge DVD collections. Most DVDs are rented, viewed just once and then returned. But if you rent DVD you'll get only DVD: no comix, no box, etc. Everything included on DVD can be viewed on rental DVD as well, but addons to DVD will be only available if you'll buy it! Thus it's makes perfect sense to add "free" things to DVD and not on ( ... )

Great review, but the yousendit link says the file is unavailable. Odd.

Still good stuff. I look forward to your future reviews.

Get the Fatal Fury 2 OVA. 1 is okay, but 2 kicks its ass. Incredible ending theme, too.

Didn't Motion Picutre have the Kim Kaphwan fight? That was worth something, at least.

I think he kicks a zombie in the face at the beginning and that's all.

Mizuki shows the goods in Angel Blade PUNISH!
So that's who the chick in that pervy TV show from ep. 2 was.
