Unauthorized Subject

Apr 28, 2009 01:49

Characters: Jade (fonic_artist), Karin (lovemebiteme)
Setting: Jade's office
Time: Tuesday afternoon
Description: Jade has information that there's someone on the island he doesn't have data on. He calls in Karin to have her do something about that.
Style: AIM
Warnings: Not much...

Jade strode into his assistant's office, just outside his own - but from the hallway, not from his own office. His one o'clock appointment was waiting there. "Karin. I trust you haven't been waiting long." That was a statement, not a question - it was 1:03. "I needed to attend to something in the fomicry lab. Please, come in."

Karin had been sitting there staring down at her nailbeds when Jade walked into the office. It wasn't that she was bored or impatient so much as she was passing off the time until she would be called back. When he arrived and called her to his office, she stood up with a flat smile to show she was paying attention and eager to work, and she walked on into his office, "Thank you, sir."

Jade closed his door behind them and hung his lab coat on a hook in the corner. He sat down at his desk, and pulled a file out of a stack. "Please sit down." He glanced over the file again as Karin sat. "This will be an optional assignment. I feel you'd be the best choice, but you may refuse without prejudice. If you refuse after hearing the details, however, I'm afraid your memories of this meeting will have to be redacted. Shall I continue?"

Karin's red eyes studied him carefully as she listened to him. An optional assignment? ... Memory erased? But, a job was a job and if she could impress THE Dr. Jade Curtiss then she would have good potential for the future. This sounded interesting already, "All right."

"Excellent." Jade passed the file he was holding across the desk. The front page looked like a printout from the journal network: "Hey look! I joined the network! I never really got to use computers before..." "This was automatically logged by IT as it was made," Jade explained. "The original post is now locked. The author seems to be an unauthorized subject - he was not recruited or in-processed, and there's no record of how he arrived at Utopia. As far as we can tell, he fell out of the sky."

"Fell out of the sky?" Karin repeated, questioning. Of course that wasn't possible - right? She looked over the file as it was handed to her, "So, unauthorized kid is now on the island. I'm sure the people in charge of keeping everyone in order are upset." She looked up to Jade, curiously asking, "Where do I come in?"

"First of all, the people in charge of keeping everyone in order are quite ignorant of all this, as far as I know. Please try not to let anyone in Public Relations or Security find out." Jade sighed. "Security, in particular, has a history of blowing subjects up first and expecting us to ask questions later.

"Meanwhile, we haven't had a chance for preliminary data collection on this subject. I want him available as a research subject. Not to mention, if Security does find out he's here and have him detonated, I want to be able to put him back together. Usually we transfer subjects here in their sleep, during their initial stay in the hospital, but obviously we can't do that this time. So your job is to find this subject and bring him here, without letting him know where this facility is."

She listens, although her listening skills aren't that apparent as she flips through the file while he spoke. "That shouldn't be a problem. I won't assume such, but he looks like he'd be easy to manipulate and transport..."

Karin sets the folder back down on the desking, having skimmed over everything briefly. "I'll get on it right away. How soon would you like him?"

"As soon as is safe and practical. The testing group already knows he's coming. But keep in mind that the friends he mentions will probably try to interfere if they have a chance." Sheets on Ion and Sora were in the back of the file. "One of them is a high-powered type L. Be careful."

Karin nodded, "I noticed those two. One nut case and then one with some sort of power? Shouldn't be too hard to avoid, especially the L-type. Unless he knows I'm coming, none of them will even be able to tell I'm there." She pulled her glasses off, wiping off a smudge with the end of her shirt. "I'll have him in some time tonight then."

Jade nodded. "Good. Should you need any equipment or other support, let me know, but it sounds as though you have things well in hand."

"I'll be fine," Karin replied confidently. "I'll get to it immediately." Kidnap a kid? And not just any kid but a little ignorant angel type. Seemed too easy. "Thank you, Sir."

"You're welcome," Jade sighed. "You can go get started, then... oh. One more thing."

Although she had stood to her feet, she easily turned around and looked back to her boss, "Yes?"

"Should it be tactically expedient," Jade said, with a sudden, vicious sarcasm, "you have official permission to be gentle. By his writing style, the subject sounds about nine." With a slight shake, he collected himself. "At your discretion. That's all." He waved her vaguely toward the door and opened a different file from his desk.

Karin nodded. The file clearly spoke, from his words, as a kind, too-trusting personality. Although she had to go in with the assumption that he was going to be a problem, she figured easily that it would not be the case. "Gotcha."

Jade was already buried in his work. He didn't look up again as Karin left.

karin, log, jade
