I use Three mobile broadband from the phone and it's pretty decent. I get good speeds in most places. I don't have experience using the USB adapter though.
I used the PC card version with three and was very happy with it. I brought it back with the intention of getting the USB one for reasons not relevant. I rarely use anything on the internet that'd make me notice it being slow, so I can't really judge on that. I can also get reception in my flat, which can be dodgy even for mobile reception. And all the way from Rathmines to Tallaght on the bus seems fine, reception-wise. I have never owned a Mac, so I can't answer on that either, sorry.
I got it from Three at the weekend. Out here in the sticks speeds are poor unless you use it from an elevated spot (which I can). My first impression is that the asserted (i.e. fictional) speed is about 10x higher than the actual.
Three do claim you can take it back within 14 days if you don't like it though.
I haven't had a chance to assess it fully - seems ok for browsing but needs testing on gaming, VoIP and video before I can give it a seal of approval. If you intend landline replacement, I would either plan to avail of try-after-you-buy-then-return or wait for some test results.
In terms of landline replacement, there are some failrly decent VoIP services around these days - blueface is pretty solid.
