Character
Name: Sergio Carter
Series: Minor Acts of Heroism
Timeline: Just before Simon returns with Nilius from the mall.
Canon Resource Links: TV Tropes has a good summary of the series' premise and this page on the official site has his basic profile!

As Sergio's canon is still ongoing, the fine details of his backstory have yet to be revealed. But considering his past has been coming up a fair bit, particularly in the latest pages, it's likely the story will reveal more of it soon. The basics of what we presently know are that Sergio is a descendant of a vampire who is alive to this day. That guardian, Julius Catargiu, presently uses his vampire abilities to fight as a superhero (alias: The Gentleman) alongside other superheroes. He's also ridiculously wealthy. Something is implied to have happened to Sergio's immediate family; had Julius not taken him in, Sergio would have been placed in a foster home. It was something of an emotionally scarring event, since Sergio is presently not attending school and, as Julius describes it, he spends his days sitting by the window and looking depressed.

In order to try and help Sergio, Julius tries to introduce him to the child of a fellow superhero, Simon. Antics ensue when Julius and his friend go off to protect the city, and Sergio discovers that Simon is actually the sidekick Everywhere Kid, his idol and current object of his preteen ... affections. He also meets the king of Atlantis who is a girl named Nilius, learns that Julius is a vampire and The Gentleman, and learns that Simon's dad is the famous hero, Everywhere. Considering all the crazy stuff he learned, he accepts all this information with relative grace despite being "very upset," as he puts it, and agrees to ask questions Julius returns from his other superhero duties.

Skipping a head somewhat, Sergio, Simon, and Nilius were about to hang out in the mall before a fire breaks out thanks to two super villains. Simon teleports Sergio back to his room and heads off to help save the day with Nilius. Sergio, being the only non-super powered person, sits patiently in Simon's room and waits for their return.

Personality:

The most succinct way to explain Sergio's typical attitude would be sullen. He has introverted tendencies by nature, and his recent sudden change in lifestyle has done nothing to mitigate his attitude. Sergio is the kid who stands at the back of the room at a party with an expression that reads he does not want to be bothered. He will not seek out social interaction if he is lonely and will instead choose to sulk, and if he is deeply bothered by something but can't bring himself to express it (or chooses not to) he will hold it in, brood over it, and continue to sulk. He does not mean to be off-putting, but he does not know exactly how to not be. Being twelve, somewhat lost, and nowhere near the age of emotional maturity, he tends to flounder in his feelings which then visibly manifest as unsociable behavior.

However, the fact that he tends to be withdrawn is significant that it tells other people that he is being bothered by unpleasant feelings. Similarly, if he is excited, flustered, or happy (as rare as that is, for him), it's extremely easy to tell. Though Sergio tries to be furtive in revealing his thoughts and feelings, he more open with his emotions than he ever means to be. For this reason, his reactions are not terribly complex and easy to maneuver: his default state of being is gloom, and he is fairly persistent about maintaining that attitude. But should one find something that piques his interest he will become curious, and if someone teases him enough he will easily become embarrassed (and may loop back into sulking, depending). He is only vaguely aware that he is easy to read and poke at, and even so he is not really aware of how to better manage his emotions. Being unable to deal with something like his emotions is depressing, especially considering how many other emotions he is going through due to his sudden change in caretakers.

However, Sergio is not antisocial for the sake of being sullen, and he does not go out of his way to find things to brood or sulk over. In reality, he's painfully shy, which lends itself to antisocial behavior, which lends itself to loneliness, which then lends itself to brooding. He does like people (as much as most children his age typically would, anyway), but his present emotional turmoil and insecurity regarding how to interact with them makes it difficult for him to express himself and thus socialize with them. He is not good at speaking to boys his age, but he can manage it if placed in a situation to; and even then, he is not particularly good at lively conversation. He is awful at dealing with girls (especially cute ones) and cannot speak to them at all, instead flustering, getting nervous, and trying to relay his message through a male peer he ... mostly trusts. Unfortunately, because being personable is not his strong suit, he does not typically manage to form strong bonds quickly, fantastic circumstances notwithstanding.

Another contributing factor to his accidental self-alienation is his blunt nature and occasionally morbid train of thought. If Sergio thinks something, he will generally say it -- and sometimes he's so absorbed in his thoughts he might not realize what he's saying might be strange, or that he's vocalizing his thoughts to begin with. He is generally skeptical of the world and is quick to criticize, though not with malicious intent so much as the exasperation of a twelve-year-old boy who does not have a better means of expressing himself or another outlet by which to channel his feelings. However, he is unobtrusive, partially by nature, and does not want to trouble people; his opinions may be blunt and vaguely unkind, but they are not rude or meant to jab at someone. His morbid thoughts are similar: he will say something, generally to poke at the irony of the situation, but he will often try not to say anything that can be too wounding.

Strengths:
- Despite his attitude, he does mean for the best.
- Very good at listening and does not protest something when he understands he would only interfere.
- Very studious and patient; can occupy himself without causing any trouble.
- Practical; with every day matters, he can easily identify what is too little or too much (such as with money) and is mature in that he is able to identify these boundaries.
- Well-read; though he may be twelve and spend a good chunk of his time in a poor mood, he has and does set aside time so that he might not be ignorant of the world around him.
- Loyal; though he may carry suspicions or be unhappy with certain things, he would not betray others, especially people he's close to.
- Good at keeping secrets; he is capable of understanding the gravity of situations and would not share a secret without a good reason to.

Weaknesses:
- Shy; has difficulty talking to people, even people his own age.
- Nearly entirely unable to talk to girls, particularly those his age due to aforementioned shyness.
- Extremely easy to tease / cannot hide his emotions well.
- Easily depressed or bothered; generally accepts most things very grudgingly.
- Generally very sullen and not someone most people would hang around by choice.
- Does not share his feelings, instead opting to keep everything inside.
- Has difficulty sympathizing with / having empathy for others; tends to emotionally isolate himself.
- Because he does not know how to talk to most people, would have difficulty requesting help or advice (or, at least, not at first; he might eventually give in and ask, but likely very sourly).

First Person Sample:

[the feed opens with two things hovering over it: one very excited-looking poochyena that is presently sniffing the gear curiously, and one notably unexcited boy, who is not looking at the gear at all. instead, he seems to be perusing through the trainer handbook, a faint frown visible on his face. a few moments pass before he notices the pokemon lose interest in the gear and wander off, finally glancing down at the pokegear he's left on the ground.]

Did it finally turn on? ... I'm not really good with things like this. Julius doesn't have any.

[having settled his evidently amateur handling of the device to... himself(?), he picks it up, tilting it from side to side.]

... It probably doesn't work, anyway. It says it's supposed to be for communication, but the instructions don't really sound like they were made for people who have no idea how to handle it. Like me. Just because I turned it on doesn't mean it'll do what it's supposed to.

[and as if sensing its caretaker's oncoming sour mood, the poochyena quickly trots back into view and gives sergio a wet, sloppy lick to the face. sergio, very obviously taken off-guard and flustered, drops the device and tries to push the pokemon away. the gear lies on its side, but sergio's now-tomato red face and extremely embarrassed expression are still clearly within view. the pokemon seems fairly pleased with this result, sitting where it is and resistant to sergio's attempts to push it further.

defeated, sergio moves away a few inches, picking up the pokegear again. he watches the poochyena from the corner of his eye, still flushed.]

... That didn't happen, okay? If anyone could see that. I just... want to know why I'm here. And if there's police. Unless this isn't a kidnapping, even though it really looks like that.

[a beat.]

Does anyone know whose this is? [makes a vague gesture to the poochyena, still sitting contentedly.] ... I think it's supposed to be mine, but there's no way I can keep it. So, I guess... does anyone want it, before I go back?

[he sounds somewhat unsure about the whole "going back" thing, and his face pretty clearly indicates that he isn't entirely sure about the possibility, either. but he decides it would be best to end his message (which he still isn't sure will reach anyone) there, and shuts the broadcast off without so much as a "thank you."]

Third Person Sample:

As cliché as it sounded, he could tell something was wrong from the moment he woke up. First of all, his room, though it was presently his and with most of Julius's creepy knick-knacks and decor shoved into the closet, was still in Julius's house. Which meant it looked like it was straight out of some horror novel. Which meant, logically, that when he opened his eyes and saw a pretty normal, homely-looking room, that he clearly was not in his ... well, not his, he corrected himself, but his quasi-uncle's home.

Which would have been creepy, had he not remembered he was previously sitting on Everywhere Kid's bed. And then he had sat up instantly, flushed, and quickly jumped out of the bed, ready to fight for his innocence and he swears he didn't mean to fall asleep in Everywhere Kid's bed like a creep or something please don't think he's weird -- or weirder than they thought he was, anyway-- And then he realized this wasn't Everywhere Kid's bed. To begin with, it was much too clean.

Which meant he was in some unknown house, in some unknown kid's room, possibly being held captive by some unknown kidnapper. Which was just his luck, all things considered. But when he thought about it, he was kind of the weakest link out of everyone he knew. He was the only un-super powered person, and he also knew the secret identities of other notorious super people. He immediately felt guilty, even though he hadn't even confirmed his fledgling hypothesis yet. Had he gone and blew it, like Everywhere Kid had thought he would? Had he let his idol down already? It had only been, what, a day, tops? Good going, Sergio. Good job.

Thinking how badly he had clearly let Everywhere Kid down rendered him immobile for a long while, but he finally managed the courage to try and think... well, almost positively. After all, no one had extracted information from him yet; if he could escape, then maybe he could make up for his folly.

With that thought in mind, he tried to sneak downstairs . . . Though he was pretty surprised to see a woman there. He only vaguely managed to ponder her identity -- after all, weren't super villains usually more... villainous-looking? -- before she took notice of him. What happened next occurred too quickly for him to keep up with, between his paranoia of thinking he was possibly facing his kidnapper (or henchwoman), generally not being able to confront people, and her shoving a backpack in his hands and shuffling him out of the house with only a few words of good luck.

Um.

He had stood for a few moments, bewildered, looking back at the door. The lights were now off. That meant no one was home, even thought Sergio knew someone very much was. So... this meant what? He quickly scanned the surrounding area, then the backpack in his hands.

Then, he proceeded to take a mature and daring course of action: he sat down on the doorstep, brought up his knees against his chest, and rested his forehead against them. He needed to think and figure out what was going on, sure. But just what was he supposed to do now?
