Atheists have told me that they're prejudiced against, but I didn't know to what extent. I was running an ad to tell people in the area that UUs welcome atheists, agnostics, humanists, non-theists, and questioners - I wrote 3 separate ads Fri. night that were all the same except the one word that was different in each of the 3 and they all linked to the same page, but the "agnostics" and "humanists" ads were accepted right away and the "atheist" ad is still "under review" on Sun. afternoon (
they'd go to this page in case you're curious).
I emailed them yesterday afternoon and got an automated response with a link to their policy page. They can take 3 days to approve an ad and there are several reasons an ad won't be approved. I tried to figure out which one might be the policy to red flag the word "atheist" and the only one that might apply is that you can't create an ad that is against something (there was a list and "religion" was one of them). Anti-theism is the word that means "against theism" and generally against traditional religions. But apparently they think (and maybe for good reason?) that "atheist" means that, too (not from most atheists, but maybe from some).
I'm hoping that the person who reviews controversial ads works week days and will approve it tomorrow. I hope I won't have to push the issue. Maybe I should make a "pagan" ad, too, to see if that's accepted, though it wouldn't come under that policy, so it probably would be. Maybe I should simply because they are also marginalized, though.
