The stuff isn't enough

While I was in graduate school, I took up knitting. I wanted a hobby that would be inexpensive and that I could do while watching television. I once had someone ask me if it was more economical to knit one's own garments. When I finally finished laughing, he said, "I'll take that as a no."

As you say, however, there is something deeply satisfying about casting off on a project and being able to look at the finished product and say, "I made that."
