maria. Personality: Maria is still very much a little child and acts even younger than she already is (nine) to her mother's dismay. She constantly uses the sound 'uu' while she speaks or even just as a general sound to voice dislike or excitement or any other emotion. There is a story behind this, though, as to her it's a magic word to bring people happiness. (Hence why continues making the sound even when her mom gets mad at her for doing so in the first place.) Speaking in third person is another verbal tic of hers. She's still a big fan of toys and stuffed animals (expecially her plush lion Sakutaro which her mom made specially for her) and takes them along with her all the time, whether it's to school or when she goes out shopping. To her they are more than just regular toys, they're full-fledged friends. She generally loves things most kids like, for example candy, cute (western) clothing like dresses and watching cartoons on television as well.
She is a very cheerful child and loves having fun with people. Maria does, however, need some time to get used to people. To some strangers she might be a bit shy and withdrawn in the beginning (for example the way she acts to Battler after not seeing him for six years) but she quickly opens up to someone fun. Maria can be very kind too; she's shown to try to comfort and cheer up Battler whenever he's feeling the most despair at the witch killing everyone. She also doesn't even mind being bullied because she believes that for each bullied kid a 'witch' will protect the rest of the class against accidents and illnesses. She's able to sacrifice her happiness for her classmates' sake (even though they're the ones bullying her), proving that Maria does have a mature way of thinking at least in that sense. She's naive and trusting; even when someone tells her something that's either obviously a joke or not true she will believe it without doubt. Maria also will keep her promises no matter what it takes, since she thinks that keeping your promises is important. (An example is when she stays outside alone in the pouring rain because her mother told her to stay there.) This also means she dislikes lying and will scold or get mad at people for doing so.
But as kind as Maria can be at times, she does have the negative characteristics of a little kid too. She can whine just as much as other little kids, perhaps even as much as kids younger than her. Once Maria has something in her mind she's nearly unable to let it go, even if it's bothering other people. For example when she was looking for 'her' rose in the rose garden and couldn't find it and people told her to go back inside, she started throwing a tantrum because she couldn't put it off her mind. Whenever Maria starts a tantrum she usually refuses to listen to other people or common sense anymore. She can however be very whimsical too and even quickly shift from a tantrum back to a happy mood.
There's also another side to Maria, a much darker side. She always believed in witches from the start, but she believed in a happy and kind sort of witches that make candy fall from the sky and drink tea together. Because she felt a lack of her mother's love (up until it climaxed when her mother tore her plush lion / best friend Sakutaro apart) this changed and she started studying the occult, a much darker sort of witches. Maria developed a near second personality because of it. When she starts talking about the occult or magic she can suddenly come across as very creepy or even psychotic with expressions not at all like a little kid's and creepy high laughter. Sometimes it goes further than just that, for example in the fourth arc her mother drives her over the edge by tearing apart her favourite plushie and only friend Sakutaro. By borrowing Beatrice's power Maria kills her own mother over and over again in the most cruel ways, saying that she might be able to forgive her mother now she has suffered just as much as Sakutaro. She can change just as quickly from these creepy moods back to regular happy self, just like with her tantrums.
Regardless of that one incident and all the abuse, Maria loves her mother and the reason she wants Beatrice to bring them to the Golden Land so badly is because she wants the magic there to give her back the love she didn't get from her mother. Maria's optimism is also shown in her relationship with her mother. Even though her mother tells her that she's busy with work and there are huge hints pointing to her just going on vacations with men or whenever her mom gets mad at her Maria still tries to look at it optimistically. When Ange reads Maria's diary she states that Maria has a very sad life, but Maria says that it isn't sad at all; she and her mother love each other very much. Even when Ange says that Maria must be feeling alone because she has to stay at home alone so much Maria just says that she's having lots of fun with her friends (which are actually just her plushies). She usually tries to make the best out of situations.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Maria seems to have great talent for memorisation when it comes down to the things she bothers to remember. For example, Maria has an extensive knowledge of any and all occult things, especially things related to witches. She's able to remember, recognize and re-create magic circles into great detail, even down to the Hebrew writing that goes along with it and what it means. She's also at the very least slightly knowledgable in other things related to the occult, for example Latin and English (the languages most used for it). She's a kind and optimistic girl and tries to help out the people important to her, even when it's practically impossible for a little girl like her.
But Maria is, of course, a little child and therefore she is physically quite weak compared to teenagers or adults. Being a child also brings along other weaknesses, for example at times being quite whiny and being prone to throwing tantrums when things aren't going her way (sometimes it doesn't even have to be something big - in her canon she's shown throwing a tantrum about not being able to find back a rose in a rose garden). Whenever she throws a tantrum it isn't easy to understand her since she mostly just wails, calls 'uu' over and over again and just repeats a few other words.
She is also (partially because she's still a little girl, but it's definitely part of her regular personality) very naive and trusting. Maria believes in witches and other supernatural things with all her heart when nobody else does. She will go along with whatever anyone says, even if it's a joke: she just doesn't realise that it's a joke or that someone is lying. Maria will believe just about everything that's told to her. It's not very hard to fool Maria.

Samples
First Person Sample: [ As the video feed switches on the camera seems to be moving up and down a bit, somewhere near the screen's bottom the top of a Misdreavus' head can be seen. Yes, Maria placed her Pokégear on top of her Misdreavus so she can freely move during recording.
The little girl's voice comes from somewhere off screen. ]
Uu-, stay there for a bit.. Maria has to tell everyone a very important message, okay?
[ Now she trots into the camera's view with a big beaming smile on her face. ]
Hi everyone! Uu-! Maria is inviting everyone to a very, ve-ry big pajama party! [ She moves her arms as far apart from each other as possible to show exactly how big this pajama party is. ] Everyone is allowed to come as long as they promise to keep it fun! Let's get many people so everyone can be happy and noisy and we'll all have a really fun time.
If you don't know much about pajama parties, that's okay! Maria knows a lot about pyjama parties, uu! Had many pajama parties with Sakutaro and the rest. Sasusuke and Sasukichi didn't know much at first too, but Maria and Sakutaro taught them e-verything, uu! It's really fun, kyakyakya! We can stay up all night and make our own drinks. Sometimes they end up tasting gross, but--
[ In the middle of her wild gesturing and excited story, the camera suddenly seems to drift off, now showing off the surroundings. ]
Misdreavus..
[ Maria's voice comes from off screen again, sounding more agitated now. ]
Uu-! Come back, come ba-ck! Maria wasn't done ye-t, uu, uu, uu--! Return it to Maria, give i--
[ The Pokégear topples off the Misdreavus and falls to the ground, ending the feed. ]
Third Person Sample: Maria didn't quite recall going to sleep, but she still felt like she just had a very, very nice dream when she woke up in this strange bed. The kind of dream she didn't quite feel like waking up from. After all, she had finally gone to the Golden Land, right? The Golden Land where she could happily stay with Beato forever, where she could make a nice Mama who always loved her, that happy Golden Land.. And Ange had been there too, Ange who had rejected magic and her happiness before and who was finally able to see the magic of happiness Maria had been trying to teach her all along. Even Sakutaro was there, she vaguely remembered.
That's right.. All of them could have just happily stayed there, right? Would there have been anything wrong with that? Happily staying together in the Golden Land with Beato, with Sakutaro, with Ange..
Those thoughts were what slowed down Maria's reaction to her new environment. As she slowly really woke up from her sleep and opened her eyes fully, she noticed that this wasn't her regular bedroom, nor the guest rooms on Rokkenjima where she had been only a little while ago. She frowned as she looked around, trying to spot anything familiar in the strange room.
"... Uu-." The sound came out with a tone of displeasure, the sort of displeased sound that was the warning sign that indicated Maria was about to throw a tantrum.
Quickly the little girl threw the blankets off herself with little consideration for them and noisily ran down the stairs. "Uu! Mama, mama--!" Maria managed to somehow reach the bottom of the stairs even though she ran off so wildly she might as well have tripped - in fact, she almost did trip and fall on her face at the last step, but managed to catch herself in time.
She wasn't sure where she was, but surely her mother would know the answer, right? There had been times before when she was taken along to a party by her mother, had fallen asleep earlier and was put into a random bed for the time being.. So this was probably just like that! There was nothing to worry about, she would just have to turn this corner and look into the kitchen and her mother would be standing there, happily laughing at her and telling her--
"Honey, I'm so proud of you! Good luck on your journey from today on, okay?" The woman was all smiles but regardless Maria froze up the moment she ran into the kitchen. This person wasn't her mother, not her Mama. She didn't even look or sound like her.
Maria's expression immediately grew from shock to a pout and finally to a frown. "Uu-. Mama's where? You're not Mama! Give back Mama to Maria, return Mama--! Uu, uu, uu--!"
She did what every little child (or perhaps mostly children younger than her) would do in that sort of situation - throw a tantrum. But even that couldn't help her, Maria was practically rushed out of the door before she could tell the woman anything else.
"Uu-!" The sound turned more and more into a whine. The Pokédex bleeped on and it started playing the welcome message, but Maria wasn't listening. She was alone in this unknown place without her mother, without even Sakutaro or any of her friends from the animal forest band.. "Uu, uu--! Mamaaa, uu--! Sagudarooo!!" Her words came out slurred as she continued to make the crying sound.
Somewhere on the background the Pokédex just continued on as if nothing was happening.
