For a reason I cannot understand, the British Vegetarian Society also allows membership to those who eat chicken, presumably on the grounds that while a cow is an animal, a chicken is a vegetable! I can never get my head around that one.
Possibly chickens are considered honorary vegetables, because when you cut their heads off it takes them so long to realise they're dead, and should stop running round and expire in a properly dignified manner?

The key concept seems to be that the best diet is the one we've spent longest evolving with -- prior to mastering fire and agriculture. Makes sense, comparing the billions of years that animals have been evolving in total against 9,000 years we've had fire and agriculture.
