I think SMAP doing the tribute is really great. Are they the best dancers? no, are they the best singers? no, but they are big fans and they'll put their hearts into it because it's important to them.
It's like the Freddy Mercury tributes. No one can compare to his power vocals, but in the end, I don't think anyone actually tries? that's why it's a tribute, not a copy.
Agree! ^^ Putting the whole heart into a song is the most important thing.
There's no one can replace MJ himself. But, for doing tribute, it's better going to the big fans. They'll try not to upset both fans (their fans n MJ's fans)
