tasteless logo-lacking products in the Waterloo Store

I'm amazed how the Waterloo Store is full of products that carry neither the old nor the new official look of the universitySpecifically, I was looking for a number plate holder, and they had two options with "University of Waterloo": one plastic holder with the old styled font, and a new metal holder with the text set in a random font saying " ( Read more... )

So, when you have an option of the official Gotham font vs. non-official san serif font, non-official would sell better? No way! Those non-official number plate holders are ugly and unrecognisable!

I don't know about those teddy bears, but for the licence plates - who would want a non-official san serif font instead of the official one?

I did go in person to the Store today, asking to speak with someone who's responsible for the stuff.

I do not follow your idea. The price of that licence frame with an unknown san serif typeface is 19,99 CAD + tax; are you seriously suggesting that changing it to the official Gotham typeface would rise up the cost of the item above 19,99? If so, please justify.

...where can I buy a quality licence plate holder with the official new look of the university?

Well, a licence plate holder doesn't have much room for swoopy lasers, and no accommodation for sideways text. I think you'll be out of luck.

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Well, sure, go ahead and laugh at our cool lasers! But, honestly, why do they have to pick up a random sans serif typeface, when Gotham sans serif typeface is officially recognised? (I've noticed that even the pens sold in store had some random typeface on them, too, instead of the new official one.)

The rear window sticker sold in store, for example, seems just fine - all in Gotham with two seals on both sides; but I'm not exactly sure how such items would look on modern cars that take aerodynamics into consideration (hence their rear window is far from being vertical, limiting its view from within other cars).

The new look is literally gotham text (sorta plain and unrecognizable in small sizes like on a license plate holder) and that's it ( ... )

Yes, exactly - Gotham typeface. That's what I'm asking for the lettering on the licence plate holder to be; it surely is going to be much more recognisable than some random san serif typeface.

Indeed, the strategy with University merchandising is upsetting. I was looking at their t-shirts in the store, and that t-shirt that has "University of Waterloo" in full length underneath another "Waterloo" in full length just looks really stupid. The DRC SCS red sweater shirts are quite nice, though, but it's not available for sale from Waterloo Store (I got one or two from volunteering).

I received the metal license plate holders for free a while ago, they were not very good and the text is already fading after a month on the road. So I'd probably go with the plastic ones if I were you.

Side note: The metal license plates are "laser engraved" pew pew!

Yeah, the 19,99 $ ones with the random san serif font are "laser engraved"! They should better be putting the pictures of the actual laser beams onto there! :-P

How did you get it for free, BTW? Did you have any luck with the plastic ones, does the text there stay longer? At the very least, plastic ones are way cheaper - 3,99 CAD a piece - and have the official (alas outdated) mark, so I did, of course, only got a couple of the plastic ones.

P.S. BTW, are most consumers of this merchandise display their UW affection outside of Waterloo? Because I've never seen any of these items in actual use anywhere on campus, whereas it's not so uncommon to see someone with the WLU t-shirt or the rear window sticker around town.

You can try to place a custom order...

http://www.waterloostore.uwaterloo.ca/custom.html

Not sure how much extra it would cost though.
