So during HSPA testing today, I was daydreaming about story ideas, and here's what I came up with. Most horror stories begin with character established in an ordinary, day-to-day, rational world that is eventually interrupted by an inextricable intrusion of the supernatural (what Joseph Campbell would have called 'The Call to Adventure.') The characters watch the rules of their world irrevocably change and do battle with their fear that "something is out there." Well, this idea would turn all of that on its head. I want to start with characters who live in a bizarre, supernaturally-inclined world and then find themselves, to paraphrase Eminem, "snapped back to reality." The horror here would not come from the fear of something supernatural ("something is out there") but rather the hidden terrors of that ordinary, day-to-day, rational world ("nothing is out there") I don't have many ideas other than this theme yet, but I had a vague outline for the main characters in my head: (1)a girl raised in a cult that is raided by the FBI and finds herself in the "real" world for the first time, (2) a seminary dropout, and (3) a comic book/movie/video game geek who abandons his pasttimes when he finally gets a girlfriend. Anybody have any comments or criticisms? I'm still trying to figure out where to begin with this one.
