Can somebody please explain to me what the big deal is about Wuthering Heights (the novel)?

I am not being facetious here, I am in earnest. I finally got around to reading it, and..I'm totally stumped.

How is this the greatest love story in English literature? How are so many people moved by the characters? How can people compare their own love ( Read more... )

I've never understood either, though I have to admit that I skipped the middle, which I was able to get away with because my class was reading it for the tuberculosis.

I somewhere formed the impression that the connection (or perceived connection) with Eclipse was supposed to be that Bella comes to the realization that she, like Cathy, is being a twit (or, from a broader perspective, all three of them are being twits and her handling of the situation is just twisting the knife). But at this point I'm comparing two books I have some awareness of but have not actually read.

hmm you are probably right there about Eclipse... though if that is the case then I have to wonder which guy is supposed to be Heathcliff? Edward as Heathcliff doesn't really work because she had chosen him from the beginning, and never really strayed from that, and Jacob doesn't work as Heathcliff because it would then mean that Bello going off with Edward was a tragic mistake, and while I agree with that...it seems that that is not what Meyers is implying. And at the end of it all...even at their most dense, none of the three of them can really compare to Catherine Heathcliff and Edgar in the twit department. ugh. I am having a really hard time finishing this book. I mean I like a bit of child abuse as much as the next girl, but this is just...ridiculous...and unrealistic...

Based on the references mentioned here, I think Edward is supposed to be Heathcliff. That doesn't answer the question why, of course, except for the mention blood-drinking. And that I guess the Eclipse characters can see themselves in Wuthering Heights if they want to regardless of whether or not it's actually apt.

Most of the things widely considered classics are not all they're cracked up to be.

Thank You. It's an awful story with completely unsympathetic characters.
