By the way, how is Slovenija and gay rights, and just general tolerance of it, right now? I had limited experience with any gays while I was there - they weren't too interested in messages from Jesus... :)
Well, you don't get stoned to death if you're gay, but it's not exactly something you'd want to put on your dorbell next to you last name either. I guess we're where most countries are - our generation is becoming more open, our parents are still pretty stone-age.
As for gay rights... Hm, when exactly were you here? Because there was this huge bruhaha a couple of years back on the topic of whether or not healthy individuals should be allowed to get treatment such as artificial insemenation. The issue was of course that if they were allowed, it would mean lesbians could have children. The government couldn't reach a decision, so there was a referendum. The result was NOT allowed. There are also legal issues with inheritance and adoption for partners of the same sex. So while I'd like to think we're becoming an open society, we're really still light years away...
Messages from Jesus. I was in Slovenija as a missionary for my church 8 years ago. I don't go to church anymore, and don't believe a lot of the things I taught people back then, but for me Slovenija was less about the church and more a wonderful experience with being in a new and wonderful culture.
Yeah, I was there between six and eight years ago, and I don't know what the state of gay affairs was then. Like I said, I think in the whole two years I met three people I knew were gay - there was the guy in Celje who would stand on the star in Center, some guy in Maribor who was nice but not as interested in talking to us as his dad was, and a young teenaged guy I met in a grocery store. That was IT - for the whole two years. I didn't know I was gay at the time, so it just wasn't on my radar to know what was going on with gay rights there.
At least this generation is more tolerant than in the past. I'd still feel more comfortable living in Ljubljana than Salt Lake City.
well there could easily be built a counter about how many people posted that just look at all stat tools that are available
But the whole thing is a bit too broad... what gay right? their right to breathe? to bread? (think new technology) just to be? or to be pain in the ass and you cant hate publicly em cause then you are discriminating? Or genenerally their right to exist in some far away land as long as they arent your childrens friends (they to be your children is not a possibility even!)
I DONT believe in GAY rights. I dont believe in STRAIGHT rights either. We have HUMAN rights already.
However I DO believe in PEDOPHIL rights. They could have the right to choose which sick slow and painfull methode of death theyd prefer ;)
Everyone has a right to do anything as far as it isnt harming anyone unwillingly and isnt bugging me ;)

REally the problem with gay rights is that they start to go OVER normal peoples right (I dont say they arent normal but if we give them a special set of rights... well then theyd be in a way). Meaning you are free to hate a straights white male in his 30es, but try that with some other cathegory and you go directly as rassist, sexist, against the old, against the youth, against the homos. And even with these free-to-despise speciments you might as well get labeled youre discriminating his land of origin or the colour of his socks. Not even goin on fat/lean, politics and religion.
But you know, if I say "gay rights", I don't mean the right to... I don't even know how to phrase what you just said... the right to supress other people's right to hate you? Gay rights DON'T go over other people's rights. If they did, this post wouldn't even exist. I don't think gay people should have MORE rights than everybody else, but you know... the right to get married. The right to inherit from your partner (who would have been your spouse if you were allowed to marry him/her). The right to adopt. And so on and on.
