Because everyone else is doing it

10 things I hate that everyone (or many, or some, or, well, that bloke over there.  Possibly) like...

1).  LMAO.  See also ROTFLMAO.  For the more refined individuals I just spat tea all over my monitor will suffice.  I have never done any of these things, my ass remains permanently attached, my floor unrolled ( Read more... )

Ooh, listy thing (11 is people who reply to listy things, right?)

Because I haven't compiled 10 things yet I'm going to pass irrelevant comment upon yours :P

1) Fair point *makes note to use things with Ms Daisy*, but then there are all kinds of little phrases in the real version of English like this, though I do tend to despise them.

2) Agreed, not too keen on this one, though it does depend who from and what the situation is; I don't tend to give cyberhugs myself though.

3) 'Sokay but not as fantastic as the hype would suggest.

4) Again, watchable but, well, it's American so it's going to be a bit shite at times isn't it.

5) Bravo :D

6) Agreed.

7) Well I see what you're saying but he still remains a complete and utter twat in my head. The ultimate in moronic idiots, in fact. I can back this up with all manner of arguments, however.

8) Hehe, Rankin all the way, though Pratchett isn't that bad... *hides.

9) Indeed.

10) L... ooh, nearly type LMAO then. Oops, looks like I did ;P

7) I agree entirely. I also think he's a tosser, but it makes me uncomfortable whenever people simply go 'my mate said it, so it must be true' and seem willing to argue their point for hours without a single fact to back it up. And that seems to happen inordinately often re. Bush/Blair.

10) You're perfectly entitled to write it m'dear. Long as we're clear that I'm going to judge you for it, and find you fundamentally wanting as a human being :P. And yes, that was a joke. I really do think sometimes that I have the people skills of some particularly antisocial small furry creature. Witness one of my finest moments:

"Yea, I can be pretty bad with people, I start conversations with things like 'Everyone who likes Little Britain is a cretin'".
"But I like Little Britain"
"Yes, that's because you're a cretin"

I thought it was terribly funny, she never spoke to me again :S

Just out of curiosity, do you believe that Bush is stupid by general population standards, by presidential standards, or by Harvard MBA standards?

What kind of arguments do you use to back this up? I'm familiar with lots of arguments that he is wrong about this or that, but there's a relatively limited set of arguments that I am familiar with that demonstrate that he is both stupid and wrong.

I'm assuming that you don't mean that he is not smart in an IQ sense, since he scores well on standardized tests. Do you mean that he is not empathetic (some sort of "EQ" issue?), or that Harvard and Yale left him ignorant?

I get your point about hugs from complete strangers or people you would not dream of coming anywhere physically close to in real life! however, i do like virtual hugs of friends when I feel like shit but they just happen to be in a different country!
And I do hate the idea of big brother, in spite of the fact that i have never watched it. the idea that there are people on this world sad enough to get a voyeuristic kick out of waiting for people to fuck each other (both in the literal or just the metaphorical sense) makes me want to cry. Or strangle them, depending on my mood.
But I wholehertedly agree to the need to back up arguments!

I dunno, I always feel hideously uncomfortable about that sort of thing. Perhaps a 'give me a ring if you want to chat' or somesuch would feel a little more pro-active to me than simply *hugs*.

What I find sadder is the voyeuristic tendency of the supposed superior middle-class educated types who get such a kick out of watching/discussing those 'lesser beings' and mocking them for it - the viewers I mean, not the contestants. If it adds to the ratings then it means the show is more likely to be recommissioned - doesn't matter what the intentions behind it were.

Its like that recent reality show with the fake space expedition. It looks from the press coverage like most if not all of the contestants were actually actors playing a part. Terribly postmodern - the punch line being that we are in fact the reality contestants, fooled into thinking that we're watching people make fools of themselves while in reality the viewers are the ones being mocked. Often the case really, but never so blatantly as that before.

Just attempted to clarify my argument but feel that I should possibly finish preparing for the tutorial I'm giving in a hour first. Will then rant back at you at length.

I get your point, but that is not what I was trying to get at. I just feel very uncomfortable about the idea that the ultimate dystopia is turned into a television show by some sadistic fuck who sees the potential to make a big wad of cash. And there's enough people out there who are emotionally numb enough that they watch it like sheep because they have not learned to question anything that comes their way in terms of entertainment. It's not so much that I look down on people who get off on the voyeurism of watching it or are desperate enough for fame to waive all their personal rights and dignity in order to partake in it, but the fact that it exists makes me question the point of the human race. To be fair, so do the BILD(equivalent of the British Sun), Carnival Societies, Paddy's Day in Dublin, Starbucks and Fox news but I'm trying to avoid those to the same extent as BB ( ... )
