I've received my good chunk of :/// faces as well in the past. And got upset many times about people complaining to me I was always drawing animals and never people (heck, also, animals is such a varied subject! People is just one kind of animals, it's not like I'm constantly drawing the same thing over and over XD) In my opinion, don't pay too much attention to working on style, just focus on learning. Try, experiment. You don't just sit there and decide on a style so just go on and draw. I see you already try different methods often so just push it more and try not to worry. I see one sometimes needs to express these kind of things verbally, and you should if you feel like it, but in the long time try not to worry about it and just go on with your process :P
Right, less talk, more drawing! xD yeah, I figure you can't just decide to draw a certain way if you're going for finding your style... so experimenting is the way! I just have to do it more, haha, and get broader range of things to be inspired by!
and yeah, "animals" is such a huge assortment of different things. Your art has a ton of variety, haha!
People on DA are real iffy over the subject of styles - what is, what is someone's, "stealing styles" changing styles, abandoning styles... blah! So many peeps on DA are so obsessed over styles they forget to have fun and explore and branch out and try shit and get or static and boring :[
Just keep playing around with art and draw/explore the different ways it can be fun? Experimenting is fun. I srsly cannot go more than a day before I see another 'art style' I want to try because they can all teach you about different ways to express shit and damnit exploring art is fun.
tl;dr I love watching you play around with art. Your pictures are fun

haha omg story of my liiiife
yeah, I see a lot of obsession about "originality" and style and I don't want to fall in that trap, but especially because that mostly consists of people drawing disneyesque, or something, and yelling at people who pick up little things that they do and it's like... settle down :I But at the same time I don't want to keep using someone else's interprestation, haha. Influence is okay, but I want to get away from straight up imitation.
and TY, I love playing around with art, I think I mostly just need to get back into it!
And what's great about the whole DA obsession with styles is how few people grasp what a style truly is. I mean, yeah, artistic concepts like "style" and "aesthetics" can be stupidly vague and esoteric, but you'd think that people who harp on and on about the importance of ~style~ would be more acquainted with what the term actually encompasses. I always got a laugh out of folks who would insist that, say, Evana's style really wasn't Disney style, you guys! It's unique and distinct and bears no resemblance to Disney!
... I need to go find the "Dolphy Style vs. Disney Style" picture.
Oh man I remember that picture. Huzzah, 2nd result in google images for search term "Dolphy style".
Just urgh along with other "style comparison" pictures like that. Those...those aren't really styles. People are not going to "lose themselves/originality/whatever" if they experiment or learn or godforbid look at a photo of a lion/dog/whatever so the picture looks like the animal they said it is.
I don't have any opinions on the whole ~style~ thing cuz I just think 'do whatever u want rofl', but some people probably insist that other people's styles 'aren't disney', because saying so would be admitting that their styles would be classified in the same vein as well? Like everyone wants to be unique and never hear that their style looks like disney or that of another artists, etc., you know?
People getting mad because you want your art to continue improving and evolving? Oh lol, deviantart. It's probably preteen/teen wolfaboos telling you that, so as a matter of principle, ignore them. I can see how it would get obnoxious fast, though. WAH WAH NO CHANGE UR STYLEZ.
You should talk to Shayde, apparently tartlets gave her a lot of grief about her (amazing and awe-worthy) artistic shift too. Because now she does illustration-y stuff and it's not Disney dogs or lions anymore and wah wah wah.
