Weird; we've never heard anything BUT the original lyrics, because we've got the music video on laserdisc somewhere.

I had just looked it up... but after years of seeing it on TV and hearing it on the radio, I had never heard 'faggot' at all, anywhere.

The controversy is unsurprising, but I don't think the artists intended it the way it was received. Unfortunately with songs it's difficult to be sure they will be understood.
