[Character]: Mary Magdalene
[Series:] Chrno Crusade
[History/Background]: Her childhood is unknown, even to her. Because of her unique abilities she constantly confused other happenings and visions for her own life. When she was no more than twelve or so the Magdalene Order took her in after hearing about her abilities. They wanted to protect her and most likely, use her all-seeing abilities to their advantage as well. But Mary had a slightly different reason for joining than her own protection.
After a few years in the Order she was visited by Chrono, a sinner and devil that had escaped from Pandemonium (Hell, devil layer place). Thing is, she already knew he was coming and eagerly helped him kidnap her despite the Order’s attempt to save her. Chrono then took her to the far west (she had been living on the east coast) where she met five other sinners who then asked her to locate the missing head of Pandemonium. She obeyed and located it easily and the five went off to retrieve it while Chrono stayed with Mary who was now weakened after using her ability.
After retrieving Pandemonium’s head, the initial idea was to kill Magdalene but something changed, no idea what, and the sinners decided to take her with them to their flying ship, Eden. While on Eden they planned to extract memory data from Pandemonium and hopefully learn how to kill her. Magdalene helped as much as she could and easily befriended the six sinners. They all enjoyed her presence mostly because she treated them like she would anyone else and didn’t fear them so they all warmed up to her quickly.
After two months the memory data was practically completed and the group rejoiced and had a little celebration in honor of their victory~! But it was all cut very short when Pandemonium began to attack everyone. Pandemonium, being a sort of queen bee of the sinners and devils, had immense strength and was easily defeating the group. Magdalene managed to keep Pandemonium distracted long enough for Chrono and Aion to finish her off. But because Mary had used a large sort of her abilities to stop Pandemonium momentarily, she fainted and did not reawaken for a week.
During her week of sleep Mary had really weird dreams and visions. Because of her contact with Pandemonium, Mary now knew many things about Pandemonium and the sinners that she didn’t before. While having one of these dreams she began sleep walking and bumped into Aion. Without really realizing it she began to tell him parts of what she knew. Aion became terribly concerned, not for Mary but more for the situation it could cause. Pandemonium was most likely trying to use Mary as a host for her supposed soul. Before Aion could get incredibly worked up, Chrono and Shader, one of the six sinners, heard Aion yelling and went to see what was going on. After they appeared Aion shook it off and Mary returned to normal.
Not long after she returned to her self she had another vision.
Mary showed a huge interest in Chrono because of a dream she had since she was a little girl. It was probably the only dream that constantly reoccurred, it was about her death and Chrono was supposedly the one to commit the crime. Her reasons for so eagerly joining them and becoming good friends with everyone was so that she could get to know the person and people involved in her murder. Perhaps this was to see the reasons why she would be killed or understand what she had seen. She figured it may be easier to come to an understanding of things if she met Chrono. Because in her dream, while he was carrying out this act, he was crying.
The vision she had at that moment was again that same reoccurring dream.
She then asked Chrono if he didn’t mind talking with her a bit. She figured it was about that time and she should tell him at least why she had chosen to join them in the first place and maybe find out why he was crying then.
Though as soon as she told him of her vision he began questioning why. She had figured that no matter how hard she tried things wouldn’t change so she might as well accept them and maybe learn more about the person who was to kill her than fighting them all the way. But before much else could be said, Aion appeared and ordered Chrono to take Mary’s head for fear that Pandemonium would take over her and attack them once again.
At first Chrono seemed to obey. It had always been his duty, right? But instead he disagreed, asking if there was another way. Mary was surprised by this. She had always asked Chrono if he did his supposed duty because it was what he wanted or if it was just what he was ordered to do. Aion and Chrono argued and Aion attempted to kill Magdalene himself but Chrono intercepted his efforts while claiming Aion always jumped to conclusions and never waited for other options. If he had waited there would be hundreds of different ways to go about things. Hearing this, after Magdalene assumed her visions were the only things continuously right, she was even more surprised than before. She never really thought of it that way, that her visions could in fact only be one option of the possible truth.
Aion and Chrono fought, resulting in Chrono losing his horns and Aion sustaining a serious wound. But after the initial blow Chrono and Mary fell from Eden down to Earth. And that’s where she is taken from.
[Abilities]: She can see everything, seriously. Not like x-ray vision or whatever, though she can scout large areas. But her main ability, that she has little control over sometimes, is her ability to see everything past, present, and future from anywhere. This is why she lost her childhood memories, she confused them with other things she saw. The problem with her ability, however, is that if used excessively for whatever reason it can really wear her out and she often times faints afterward.
[Personality]: Magdalene is very confident and never fears situations. Because of her visions she knows what’s coming and has learned to accept such facts for there is nothing she can do or say to change them. It also has made her not cower before many things including devils, of whom she sees no different than humans and values their friendship just as much. She’s a bit of a martyr though and doesn’t fight the idea of her own death and even eagerly awaits it.
With Chrono she acts just a wee bit different. She’s much more interested in learning things about him and often times pushes things to see what he will say. Simply questioning his logic or just asking why he chooses to do certain tasks so readily. Though this isn’t to say she is that serious. When it concerns her death, she can be a bit serious, but really she enjoys joking a little and even teasing Chrono. Jokes and teasing aside though, she cares for him and doesn’t want to see him hurt.
Mary also is very honest. She knows the overall truth behind many things and sees no point in lying. After all, no matter what she may do the truths and visions she sees will come to pass no matter what. Though this does help her ability to see through the acts of others. At least with Chrono she can tell when he’s just putting up some front. Not to mention her abilities probably also help with her good intuition about situations and the fact that she‘s a fast learner.
One of the last things about her is probably her appreciation for life. She’s always thought of herself as empty, since she can’t recall her own past, but at the same time she’s filled with the knowledge for everyone else. This vague line between what makes her, herself, doesn’t really bother her cause she’s never thought of things in a different way. Instead she just keeps smiling for the things around her and tries her best to help others as well, more than often putting herself last.
[Canon point]: Right after her and Chrono fall from Eden.
