gif inside a gif tutorial

Feb 07, 2012 00:54

I was asked to do this tutorial on tumblr but i'm posting it here because it's very long.

This tutorial is going to show you how to make a gif inside a gif, for example a circle gif inside a gif.

Let's start with the gif that has a circle in the middle/middle left/middle right of it.
firstly we have to do a base gif which is going to be our base gif or the backgorund to our
circle, you know how to do that, just make a simple normal gif that we are going to add our
circle on it.
and now we have to make the circle that we will place over the gif we just made, of course it
has to be smaller in size than the gif we just made, but also make sure it has the same
number of frames like the gif we just made. so we're gonna make this as a normal gif as a
start. then make a new layer and place it below all the layers of the gif, and draw a circle
using the eclipse shape tool(U) in it NOTE: hold the shift key while drawing the circle to
get a perfectly round circle.

now holding the ALT key on your keyboard click between the circle and the layer above it, you will notice that this frame is only visible in the circle part, after that still holding the ALT key click between the next layer and the layer before it, you will find that the same has happened to the next frame, repeat that with all the layers. you palette now should look like this:

now before copying and pasting the circle on the first gif we made i need to add a coloring on the circle gif, as for me, i'm only gonna add a birghtness/conrast layer to adjust my brightness and a gradient map, but the tricky part is that you have to make them visible only for the circle as well, so after you add your layers, use the same way we used when we madeour layers visible only on the circle, my palette now looks like this:

now we need to copy that circle gif after we finished it to the background gif we did in the beginning, so select all the frames in your animation line and also select all the layers in your layers palette (including the circle layer):

and in the animation line from that little arrow in the right click on it and choose (copy frames) :

then go to the first gif we made and in the animation line click on the arrow on the left and click paste frames (choose paste over selection), voila you have pasted your circle ove the gif and now if you want to move it select all the layers (including the circle layer) and move it wherever you want.
Voila we have finished the circle over gif, now add any text you'd wish to add over ALL of the layers and change it's opacity/blending mode/blending options however you want.
now let's move to the gif that has a triangle in the top left to it, it's exatly the same way like the circle gif, except that we don't have a triagle shape tool, you could still do it using the rectangle tool and then rotating it, then cropping it, but i'm not gonna do this just yet, i will make my triangle using the pen tool(p) it's pretty simple and much easier, i'll show you how.
but first we need to make a background gif the base gif just like we did in the circle gif, a gif that we are going to paste our triangle on later. so do that.
for your triangle gif, you should probably make it the same size as the background gif. and then make a new layer below all the layers like we did in the circle gif. here is how i am going to draw my triangle using the pen tool(P), how many sides does a triangle have? 3, so we will make 4 anchor points using the pen tool, you will see now why four.

but first make sure that this is you pen tool settings:

now the first anchor point i will make is in the top left corner of the canvas like this:

the second one i'm gonna do is in the top middle/middle left of the canvas like this:

third one is going to be in the bottom left corner like this:

see now we almost have our triangle but we need to close this path to have a full triangle, and this is going to be our fouth anchor point, which is going to be in the same place like the first one, or basically just click on the first point we made.
now we have a closed path/full triangle, right click on it and choose (fill path). then right click again and choose (delete path), we now have out triangle, and basically just do the steps we did on the circle, and the triangle gif in now done!

now we're left with the gif that has a kind of italic line in the middle of it, we are gonna use the same way we used with the previous two gifs, make a base/background gif that we will paste out italic line on it.
now for the italic line gif you should make your gif size just like the base gif as well, and then make a new layer below all the layers, here is how i'm going to make my italic line,
first i'm gonna use the rectangle tool(u) and make a thin rectangle like such (don't hold the shift key for this one):

now all we have to do is rotate that shape to make it and italic line, so standing on this layer, click CTRL+T ro free transform it and rotate it to the right/left whatever you'd like NOTE: before rotating it, make sure you expand it a little from the top and the bottom so that you'd have a full shape when you rotate it.:

then you know what to do after that, just like we did on the circle and triangle gifs.
now we're done, i hope this tutorial has helped you, if you have any questions feel free to message me here or on tumblr, good luck! :)
