Owl post to Parvati Patil.

Parvati.

I received your note.
It is quite insulting that after three years you still believe that I intend nothing but hurt for your sister. I am not my father, and I refuse to live in the shadow of his reputation.
If we survive this war, Padma and I will be married. This means that you will become a member of my family. If I were you, I would give some thought to what that entails.
As the eve of battle approaches, rather than increase tension between us, surely it would be better to accept that we have conflicting personalities, and let the past lie?

Valerius.

Locked to Severus Snape.

Severus,

I have created a will to cover the position of regent for Milan, Toyah's inheritance and welfare, if I should not return from this fight. I have also included my wishes for Padma. Please, if I am gone, I trust you to make sure they are both looked after well.
And finally, I have left provision for you. I am not wealthy, Flavius saw to that. Most of what I have is in need of a lot of restoration. I have left to you a modest token of my appreciation for everything that you have done for me. I know that I can be troublesome and difficult. I know that I have still many problems which need to be worked through. You have been very patient, thank you.
If we lose this war, I think we must all move to Italy. I am only speaking half in jest. I have plenty of room at Pavia, also the house in Venezia which will be suitable after some work. The cellar is terribly flooded.

Please, take care of yourself, Severus. Please return safely. After this battle, I hope very much to see you again.

You are my best father, always.

Con amore e affetto

Valerius.

Private.

My inheritance is in order.
My main concern is for Toyah to be looked after. I have arranged things so that Severus and Padma will both have a duty towards her. Severus will take on the administration of duties in Milan, and Padma will become Toyah's guardian. It is my hope that they will both guide her as she grows up.
Should the worst happen, and both Severus and Padma also not return, there is a secondary plan. Under these circumstances, Toyah will remain with the Patils in India, and I have arranged for Aurelia Dandalo to become regent in Milan. Given a choice between Venice and Florence, Venice is the lesser of two evils, and I believe the Dandalo more honourable than the Medici.
There are some in Italia who would say that I am irresponsible, fighting this war. It is not my country, and I have a duty now to my homeland, and towards my sister. If it were possible I could leave Britain now, take my sister and return to my inheritance, forget the war.
I cannot do this.
This is not my country, but I live here since eleven years. The actions of my parents have made this my fight. I owe it to their victims to see that the Dark Lord is not victorious.
I wonder, if I should fail in this, will Toyah understand? When she is older, will she forgive me for abandoning her in India to fight this cause? I hope so. She remembers Flavius, I know this. I will write to her this evening and hope that my letter to her will help to explain.
I have faced death before, and am not afraid to die.
It makes me sad that I may never see my sister grown up, and that the life I have planned with Padma, might never happen.
I had better make sure that we survive then, yes? I have plenty to live for.

~~ Still Private. Promemoria. ~~

I have left to Toyah: The Visconti seals, the keys to the city and the Duchy of Milano, the house in Venezia, the city hall and council chambers, a hunting lodge and and several smaller trade properties in Milano all bearing the Visconti mark. Also various other properties in the region, the deeds of which are kept in the vaults in Gringotts, including a small castello and lodge in Voghera, which I think is bombed very badly in the muggle wars.
Also the stopping places and our birthplace - the Castello Visconti in Pavia and all furniture and contents thereof, with exceptions below. It all sounds very grande, but really is not. Everything is all ruined by our father, and the most important things sold. This Visconti heritage is a small shadow of what we once were.

To Padma: The cottage in Oxford - there are many good memories there. All of my personal belongings, all books in my collection which are not dark, and the contents of the small wooden chest in Gringotts vault. Careful Padmad, it's very well warded. I think you know me well enough by now to realise this. It will be good practise for your cursebreaking skills, I am sure.

To Severus: Who will become regent in Milan, I have left the vineyard in Voghera. You always did wonder how I manage to have so much wine. Now you will know the secret. It is funding the upkeep of other buildings for now. As regent, you will have control over the Visconti properties and can rent places out, this is something I have not had any chance to do yet. Also to you I leave all of Flavius' extensive library and collection of dark materials. I think you will appreciate it.

To Bill Weasley, Remus Lupin, Luna Lovegood and Ernie MacMillan: The contents of the wine cellar at Pavia. This will involve a journey to Italy, but I think that you could all do with a holiday after the war. I hope that you can leave the country by then. Have a drink on me, as you British say. Be careful with the blue bottles though, they might contain poison. I was told that some of my ancestors were quite enthusiastic about such things.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enough.
I cannot do this more this evening. I am trying to make this light of heart, but is difficult and quite morbid to think about what will be left behind.
Tomorrow I will write to Toyah, and also to Padma.
I think, I hope she knows everything I have to say by now. Even so, if I might die, I want her to have something so that she will not ever forget how special she is, how very precious to me, and how much she has changed my world.
