Value freedom, not multiculturalism

We used to have debates in my Science, Technology, and Values class, which I took in the Winter of 2008. One week, the debate ended up being myself versus the entire class. My stance? That long-term multiculturalism is impossible.

I think you're forgetting that tolerating inconsequential differences is a modern phenomenon. We take a stand against honour killings, Sharia law (and more recently all religious courts), and genital mutilation. We no longer take stands against minarets (Sweden or Switzerland? I have several problems with this response:

1)You condemn cultural relativism when it comes to Muslims but not the Swiss? It's okay for the Swiss to be less "freedom-oriented", but not okay for Muslims to be "freedom-oriented"?

2)Just because Europeans have a milquetoast approach to multiculturalism doesn't mean multiculturalism can't work.

3)No it is not racist. Congratulations, you managed to out-dictionary me on that point.

Do you even remember why racism is bad? There isn't anything special about race. It has to do with discriminating on a correlated factor, rather than the root issue to which you object, and you're alienating a whole group of people. There are differences within Islam just like there are differences within Christianity ... or men. 99% of rapists are men, just like 99% of "terrorists" are Muslim (a fact I doubt, but let's pretend), but you nevertheless judge the rapists only, and don't condemn all men (or at least you shouldn't).
