Dear Val,
I sent Elfwine to bring back Elphir, because the advisors were going to try him for treason. But when my nephew returned, it was only with Elphir's horse. I asked him were my brother was, and he just kept assuring me he was wasn't here anymore. They fought on the road. Elfwine said Elphir struck him, and he hit back. Yet when I accused him of murdering my brother, he denied it. So, I don't know if Elphir is alive or dead. I've hired the Corsairs to try and locate them. They're leaving from Dol Amroth. Perhaps if you could look coming from where you are, someone will come across Elphir.
I understand about being in charge. I'm just scared. I don't know what's happened to Elphir, and he's my favorite sibling. We were fighting a lot when he left, and I don't want that to possibly be the last of what was between us. Plus I don't know if I can trust the advisors here, and there's no one I know that is on my side. Elfwine was supposed to be on my side. But I will try. I promise.
I'll organize some of my stepdad's rangers to start the search. Maybe he's hurt and can't travel. All Elfwine told me was that Elphir "wouldn't come for me". When I asked him what he did, he said I would see.
Don't trust anyone, but go ahead and let the advisors think you do. If they think you're naïve and unsuspecting, you'll be able to use that to your advantage. And try not to think at all about Merry and the children, beyond knowing that they are safe, and when this shit is over everyone can be together again.
