Food History Question

Jun 14, 2008 22:56

I have literally been searching for days to see if a recipe I like would be suitable for the SCA. I've looked in (online) SCA/Medieval cookbooks and searched SCA authentically medieval recipes with original receipts.

Spinach and Feta FrittataIngredients include ( Read more... )

Wow! Thank you!

Sorry about the confusion in my post. I basically wanted to know whether or not this recipe, or a suitable altered version, could be made for SCA consumption in any capacity. I have found other SCA members' websites that included frittatas in their feasts but can't find anything that is period documented.

The recipe I have is for using a muffin pan but for the SCA I was planning on making this in a larger pan - making one big piece rather than 18 muffin sized pieces.

Frittatas are essentially omelettes. There are period omelettes, especially late period in England and France. There are also egg dishes in the Italian milieu from about 1500 on. You just have to watch the ingredients and the methods.

There are a lot of feast cooks who don't care whether or not what they cook is period. I have seen feast menus that include spaghetti including marinara sauce, baked potatoes and corn/maize. Some people don't like cooking outside what is familiar to them. I think that your instincts are very correct to question anything that isn't documented.

Thank you! I really appreciate that.

I've been finding recipes I want to try in our home just for us that 'seem' like they'd fit in with the medieval atmosphere but I don't want to serve them at SCA activities until I find out whether or not they would have been prepared during the Middle Ages.

I have a list of breads, pies/tarts, stuffed food etc I want to try. In fact my dabbling has prompted my husband into looking for a period pickled egg recipe - so far to no avail. I know things were pickled and I know there were eggs. I know that people pickled all kinds of things but I can't find anything with a recipe for pickled eggs that's documented by an approved medieval source. Very frustrating!

GodeCookery and Cariodoc's websites are my usual reading material LOL...

I couldn't find frittatas. I found where others have made frittatas for SCA events but I get the impression they are made for ease rather than for documentation.

Back at the Fall Collegium, the food you shared with me and my mother... what was that? I was making deviled eggs the other day and that reminded me of that food and I found stuffed eggs (I think on GodeCookery) and am planning to try making them soon. But for some reason I had thought it was some sort of meat filling in the dish you made... My memory is bad bad bad.
