Unless you're full time meritting on NIN (and you have MNK and BRD so you should pretty much never merit on NIN) I don't really see a point to Katana merits. They're ridiculously helpful if you're a full time NIN and have a great merit/gear set up to do the best damage but still if you switch those merits to H2H your MNK will be doing better damage.
The only reason I could see for having Katana merits in your case is greater Wyrm taking as NIN/DRK and using souleater to get some more hate. But seriously how often is that? if you have fun meritting on MNK and want to be optimal at that then go all out for it. Katana merits are kind of bleh when you consider what else you could be doing with those merit points.
I tend to agree with this statement. I disagree with Razorcat's comment that weapon merits are useless. I can't speak to other jobs, but for Monk, H2H merits are absolutely king. It adds base damage as well as built-in ACC. you just can't get that anywhere else. The advantage for Monk is particularly pronounced since our weapons are based off of a measure of "+DMG" rather than an absolute number. The result is that we can do very good damage with bare fists..... for example, Destroyers are "+18" damage. I can dig up the calculations over on the KI monk forums where Aurik and Pathwriter have gone into painful detail on Damage calculations, but suffice it to say that Monk H2H Merits are second to none.
Weapon merits are useless for a tank that kites. They're useless overall for tanking stuff in general. But since OD doesn't go just one job like I do, there's nothing else I can say about his merit path.
Right on. For tanking, I agree. But for the point of his post, which was "Why do I do substandard damage as Monk?" the answer is weapon merits. It's what will allow you to use meat, basically. I only have 3 H2H merits and still can see a difference.
