PLD Merit thoughts

Nov 27, 2006 10:56

I was requested to come as PLD to Dynamis - Xarcabard this Sunday, which I was more than happy to change to since I've not been asked to come as that job for such a long time. So this was basically my first real chance to test out the tier 2 merits I got for the Job.

was it really 35k per hour (so 105k in 3hrs) or total for 3hours (so 12k/hr)? When I solo or duo I just get about 11-12k/hr but I thought that was actually pretty good..
Aside from that I agree I notice still so many bad NA players (to be fair I encountered some terrible JP players too but they tend to be only at low levels and low ranks, which they seem generally good at high levels rank10ish). I also think part of the problem is that the worst NA players have the attitude of "don't tell me how to play my job" which means they never learn anything or get any better.

sounds like 12k/hr. 35k/hr just doesn't seem achievable when you work the math.Furthermore 105k is 5k excess of a fully capped merit pool.

lol, fixed.

Was writing the LJ in pieces during work this morning. I was trying to do more math than it really needed, and then ended up putting up the actual exp gained anyway w/o applying the per hour math.

Next time I think I'll write the whole thing in one sitting.

Is it really that big of a difference? I don't tank long enough from start to finish to notice the enemy crit hit rate down. If I'm lucky, the mob still stays with me as I go pull another mob at 25%ish. But if that happens, its usually because the DD's aren't killing it fast enough.

Well, I can't say for another tank, but I noticed the difference myself for sure.

You've tanked other dynamis as well? or is this your first time tanking at all? I have 2/4 enemy crit hit rate down. I don't know what you have (maxed?). i have full shield/parry/evasion merits. i plan on leveling nin soon.

oops... i meant to add:
the shield merits are definitely noticeable. sometimes i block a whole bunch on a mnk. but i need to play around more with equips for northlands since they hit a harder than city dynamis mobs.

i'm pretty much always main paladin tank when i get to take paladin anywhere. with ethereal earring and capped shield skill, combined with autorefresh and parade gorget when applicable (and refresh and ballad), mp regen is awesome. as PLD/WAR, chivalry isn't quite that hot. but when you do a lot of PLD/NIN stuff, you're keeping hate almost exclusively through your usage of MP, so having chivalry at 15 min might help bigtime over the course of a long battle (ultima, fafnir, tiamat, etc). if you don't do much of that, though, then i'd consider it unnecessary to upgrade further ( ... )

The point about PLD/NIN here is very interesting to me. We've begun using PLD/NIN for a lot of things that we could and have used NIN/WAR for, but for whatever reason it's preferable that the tank has higher HP than a NIN/WAR can safely get. Perfect example here is Proto-Ultima. PLD/NIN can keep high enough max HP to survive Citadel Buster (no joke), have shadows up to protect himself after, and then Cure IV his way back to regaining his hate *as long as he has MP*. I'm not any sort of tank or anything but Chivalry always impressed me as the sort of thing that would be a lot better than ppl think ( ... )

Garret and Ono are buff galka's. They easily hit the 1700hp mark while with my current setup, 1700 is near my upper limit.

I'm a fan of Chivalry, but I have not put any points into the other abilities. On PLD/NIN though, having Chivalry not only gives MP back, which is then put into a quick Cure IV or two and a Flash, but I think the job ability actually acts as another hate spike.

Also, having the Homam legs is a huge bonus; MP+32 (I think?), Haste+3% and Fast Cast, which I think is very noticeable. Can't wait to get more Homam, especially the hands and feet.
