Man. I need to get into this series like years ago. D: How weird is it that I have some of the opening theme songs from the series, but have never actually seen a single episode? ^^;;;

Libraries often do stock both the new and old series DVDs -- at least the ones around here do, so you could try it that way too. Not all of the old series is out on DVD -- they've been doing it piecemeal, but there's a lot out, and the old series wasn't really big on episode-to-episode continuity. (The few big exceptions to that were released on DVD as sets.)

The new series is a bit of a reboot -- it is very clearly the same show, but they made it completely accessible to new people coming in -- any continuity with the old show is presented in a way that it's nifty for those who know what it is, but not necessary. So starting at the beginning of the new series is a reasonable point as well. (The picture above is from near the beginning of Sylvester McCoy's run -- he was the last of the old series Doctors, and he's my personal favorite, but there isn't a Doctor I don't like.)
