I stopped spending as much time here due to the massive exodus to Dreamwidth (which I haven't yet gotten into the habit of updating) and FaceCrack. Then I came back and...my god, the ads are so aggravating. :/
What I do is just allow all my posts to be auto-posted/RSS imported to my Facebook so that people who *only* use FB can comment and most people that have LJs will login to theirs to comment.
I also found that not only were few people using LJ but that almost no one would give input on things I was serious or felt strongly about. When I was posting shorter summaries, people were easier to engage (which then later gave people more reason to read the longer posts!) :P
I always preferred LJ but I do appreciate the little snippets of more people. I also appreciate how pretty much anyone I meet has a FB account and so can keep in touch with faraway friends pretty easily. That being said, I started to use my LJ more when I found out most of my Aussie friends still used it!
I can't say now that FB > LJ or LJ > FB, they are just different. :)

I do auto-post too. I like the majority of my posts to be friends-only though (in both places), and the RSS feeds won't pick up the locked LJ posts I make. So unless I copy + paste (which I can't be arsed to do) it's one or the other.
You're right though, they both have their pluses & minuses... they're just different.
LJ is my baby forever!! I love it - I wish people posted more but now I just find other people to read - makes it interesting, I find more friends all over! A lot of my "friends" post on LJ but that is because I seek them out via communities and stuff :)
