Summary: An ordinary barbeque leads to a discussion about Don's career which causes his family, team and friends to realize something he has tried to keep hidden from them.
Notes: 1) This fic was written to table 1 of the 50episodes comm. Therefore it will be written in 50 parts (one part per word prompt), each of which will be a single complete 'scene/segment/incident/whatever.' I chose Don as my claim and Table 1 (see below) as my prompt table.
2) This is an experimental fic in that it is a fantasy/sci-fi Numb3rs fic. It was partially inspired by the Stargate universe, though you need not have seen the movie and/or TV shows to follow it as it is NOT a crossover.
3) This story is in no way connected to the movie Stardust. I had the title for this fic decided before the movie came out and before I'd heard of it. When I did learn of it, I considered altering the title, but decided not too as I liked it too much as it really ties in with the plot itself.
4) This fic will, in all likelihood, become AU pretty quickly. It was first posted after Power.
5) I'm pinning Don's age as 38, as Charlie was coming up on 30 in the pilot and Don is five years old. 30 + 5 = 35, and another 3 for each year since season 1.
Description: The idea for this fic came to me while watching the end of season 2/beginning of season 3. We had gotten yet another bit of info about Don's past that didn't seem to make any sense and I started wondering whether it would be possible to actually do a fic where all of those pieces did fit together. A vague idea germinated and rapidly took shape. The only problem was that the storyline of the show at the time didn't allow for me to actually do it. At first I was resigned to having to set it during season 2 and then making it AU until the miraculous happened: the end of season 3 and beginning of season 4 made it possible for me to actually put the story in the present! It was the dissolution of the Don/Liz relationship that was key, but the whole Colby/spy situation seemed to tailored to my idea as I'd planned to have Colby (due to his military background) be able to understand that there would be things Don couldn't talk about despite how much he may want to. So having Colby just come out of an undercover op like the show had was like a gift wrapped signal from The Powers That Be screaming write your fic now!
I couldn't believe my luck. So, here it is.

Pairings: I want to say something before I begin listing pairings as I don't want people to turn away by merely glancing at the list. Although this fic will become AU, it will do so merely because I will take it in a different direction than Nicolas and Cheryl will. It may not happen right away, but it will eventually. At the present (between Power and Black Swan), though, it is not yet AU, hence there will be some hints towards both Charlie/Amita and Megan/Larry simply because those are established canon pairings. They are in the show. I will not dwell on them, but they exist in the show and hence will not be ignored in this fic. That said they are by no means central to the plot, they are merely there. Past pairings of Don will also be touched upon such as Don/Liz, Don/Kim, Don/Leah... This fic was inspired by Don's sketchy past after all!
So, will this fic have a central pairing? Yes (see my icon for this post?). As it is a Don fic, it will be a Don romance but it is not with a character we know. I know, I know, you're probably worried about a Mary Sue. All that I can say is I have created original characters as romantic partners for my favorite characters before and was not accused of this fault, so please don't turn away in fear of that. The romance will be big but it won't be everything. Besides, it works very well towards tying all the seemingly unconnectable fragments of Don's past we've gotten together!

Posting Schedule: I do not have a set schedule. I write whenever I have both the time and the inspiration to do so. Luckily each part in this series shouldn't be too long so they shouldn't take a lot of time to write, but I still need both time and inspiration to do so. As soon as I'm happy with a part, I send it out to my lovely betas and then post it as soon as I've gotten it back and gone over their comments.
