then-theres-us Jackie had insisted. She insisted on a lot of things. For being such a wonderful woman, she really was an insufferable nag at times. "No, you're not wearing that ruddy suit anymore!" "Why haven't you taken Rose on a date yet?" "What does Rose mean when she says she's single? She's not single. I know you can't be that daft." "We've found Pete's mother's ring, if you'd like it." "I see that Rose doesn't have the ring on, what are you waiting for?" Bless her heart, the woman was a menace. And her latest tirade was really the worst in his opinion. "You have to have engagement photos taken! Everyone does it, it's tradition. You need something to show to your children! Trust me, you'll be thanking me when you're older."
So here he was, standing outside underneath a trellis covered in roses, the sun shining so brightly he had to squint to see the photographer. While he thoroughly enjoyed the name pun, he was distinctly uncomfortable in the outfit Jackie had forced him into. He tugged at the collar of his shirt, his eyes squeezed shut tightly to block out the sun, his free hand going up to his hair, feeling the ridiculous amount of product he'd had to put in it to force it to lie flat. He made a disgruntled noise before leaning back against the flimsy wood of the trellis.
Rose stopped smoothing out the front of her dress, comically frozen with her limbs tangled about each other, to look up at her brand new fiance. "Doctor, are you alright?" The poor thing looked like a wounded puppy, eyes wide with sadness, a pout on his lips, a soft whining noise escaping him every so often. "You seem," What was the proper word? "troubled."
He threw his arms up in exasperation, "It's this outfit, my hair, the sun's so bright, and Rose, I'm just... terribly uncomfortable." He hadn't wanted to ruin this for her. She looked simply lovely in her lace dress, the breeze flowing through her hair, her make-up light and natural looking. She was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
Her troubled expression only lasted a moment before she let one side of her mouth quirk up into a smile, stepping forward slowly, her eyes locked on his. "We have to do this for mum," she began, earning herself yet another pout from the Doctor. "but we don't have to do it her way." The gap between them closed, she reached her hands up to his hair, lightly grabbing fistfuls and pulling them upward in an attempt to achieve his normal hairstyle. His face broke into a grin and he wrapped his arms loosely around her waist, "Rose Tyler, you are perfect."

"Oh, Rose." Jackie lamented, leafing through the photographs lying on the table before her. She pinched the bridge of her nose as she held one up in front of her, assuming the photograph itself would explain exactly why she was so displeased. The Doctor had changed into a pair of faded blue jeans, a spot of what Jackie assumed was dried blood on the knee just above a small rip, a t-shirt with a crest that she was fairly certain was from Harry Potter on it, and an obscenely long multi-coloured scarf he'd seen in a store and gone completely bonkers over. Rose was behind him, being held piggy back style, her head resting on top of his, all of her hair gathered into a ponytail on the side of her head. She still had on the dress her mother had insisted she wear, but layered on top were the blazer from the Doctor's blue suit and a tie. "Honestly, can't the two of you take anything seriously?"
While he may have been dreading a slap from her mother for it, the Doctor was wearing his manic grin as he looked over the finished product from their little photo shoot. They may have looked silly in every single one of the pictures they'd taken - there was one with Rose giving him a piggy back ride in return with the tie wrapped around her head, one of them doing handstands under the trellis, quite a few of them making strange faces at one another or the camera, one with him holding Rose above him à la Dirty Dancing, and finally, one of him dipping Rose down to kiss her soundly, momentarily forgetting the cameraman even existed - but aside from silliness, they all had something else in common, they looked extremely happy. His smile only grew wider when Rose answered for the both of them, giggling a bit as she did. "Nope."
