If people would pause for 30 seconds, think what it would mean if they invested in reusable bags, you'd see a similar drop in plastic bag use.

People are already paying to use the plastic bags - they just don't think about it. I mean, it's an overhead for grocery stores, which means they'll charge appropriately more for what they sell.

One funny thing I've heard people argue is, "Well, since you're not going to give me plastic bags, I'm not going to pick up my dogs shit." That's just a fun piece of logic to chew on.

In New Zealand they sell cloth shopping bags for $1-3 next to the register at all major supermarkets I've been to. Most people I know at least own one and most of those people actually use them most of the time. While I don't know if they're taxing plastic bag users yet, cloth bag use is like a staple feature of NZ life. Or maybe I just know a lot of hippies.

We are a non-vehicle household so of course quality cloth bags with good handles are an essential component of our grocery experience. Carting broccoli and beans 2 kilometers in a plastic bag is a fate nobody deserves and it usually ruins the plastic bag for any reuse anyway.

If anyone you know needs good cloth shopping bags, call the Isla Vista Food Co-Op and see if they still carry those batik cotton ones for $5. I've had an orange and purple one with a big black sun on it since I was 16 and it's as sturdy as ever even after 2 years of being our designated library book bag.
