Insulting?

Recently I've been noticing people make remarks about homosexuals that seem rather insulting. I am not talking about religious beliefs about marriage. I am not talking about religion at all, in fact. These remarks come from people who feel themselves to be open-minded and progressive.

"I loooove gay people!"

"Gay people are so cute."

I have a friend who's like that ("open-minded, tres liberal"), except replace gay with Asian.

Anyway, I'm not out here recoiling at those kinds of comments, but at the same time, I get what you meant. I don't see anything too insulting about gaysian, though, besides being a cheesy pun.

yes, I have noticed that too. Even from asian people themselves, which is apparently an excuse, like jews making jew jokes.

Incidentally, I thought "gaysian" was maybe the most insulting of all.

The funny thing is she's supposed to be all open-minded, but she makes fun of Christians, Mexicans, and probably Jews. (I heard her say, "What a Jew" about a substitute teacher once.) Maybe I'm just really bad at reading sarcasm, but if you hate all Christians because you think they're close-minded and turn around and loop them all together, that's a little hypocritical.

I make Asian jokes. When I make jokes about how I'm going to be a horrible driver, I know I'm just kidding and that my horrible hand-eye coordination is at fault for my shitty driving, not my race. In my case, I'm being ironic but I guess that can open the door for people to joke about Asians and really mean it.

The only thing insulting about "gaysian", in my opinion, is that it's terrible word play. Like, if you referred to someone who was gay and Asian as a gaysian, it'd just be an annoying term, but I don't think it's stereotyping.

Being "open-minded" is often an excuse for lacking knowledge and reasonable arguments.
