History: Sora’s the guy who would’ve been the cheerful sidekick - except fate sneezed.
Born and raised in the Destiny Islands, his best friend from basically the time he could speak was a boy a year older than him named Riku. Riku was always a little more confident and a little stronger, but Sora didn’t mind - they were friends, and that was it. When Sora was five, though, a girl his age washed up on the shore of the Islands, a girl with no memory of her home. She was Kairi, and Sora and Riku became fast friends with her, and from then on the three of them did almost everything together. They had other friends, of course, but the three of them were practically inseparable.
Life was normal until Sora was fourteen, when the three of them decided to build a raft and leave the islands to see other worlds, perhaps even discover Kairi’s home, which she still couldn’t remember. Always up for adventure, Sora greeted this plan with enthusiasm, as did Kairi, but Riku seemed almost obsessed with it. He wanted off the Islands desperately. Sora was a little weirded out by that, but it was his best friend and he thought he understood. Their home just wasn’t big enough for him anymore; Riku was destined for greater things.
It all came flying apart one night. The raft was done and they were set to leave the next day when a horrible storm kicked up. Sora went to the play island, where the raft was stored, to make sure it was all right - and ended up thrown into the biggest adventure of his lifetime. Kairi disappeared in front of his eyes and Riku was pulled into a dark, swirling vortex. Sora himself was flung off his world as it disappeared, ending up in a small place named Traverse Town, where his quest to restore the worlds and find his friends formally began.
It was there he met not only the people who would give him guidance on his journey in Leon, Yuffie, Cid, and Aerith, but the two friends whose bonds of loyalty would grow to depths that matched his loyalty to Riku and Kairi - Donald and Goofy. Having been told by their King to find the Keybearer and stay with him, the three initially joined forces out of practicality, but quickly grew to be very close friends. It was lucky that happened, as those bonds would be tested several times over their journey.
A consortium of villains headed by Maleficent was trying to take over every world they could using the Heartless, as well as trying to gather the seven Princesses of Heart. Sora, Donald, and Goofy had to stop them, which was no easy task and became harder the longer they went on, as well as seal the keyholes to all the worlds so the Heartless invasion could be stopped. Jafar, Hades, Oogie Boogie, Ursula, and finally Captain Hook fell, leaving only Maleficent - and Riku. Because Riku had been thrown off the Island as well, and through his own doubt and plenty of misrepresentation from Maleficent had turned against Sora and the light, believing his best friend had betrayed him and Kairi for a new set of friends the moment he could. Maleficent used that doubt to turn Riku more and more to the dark, eventually opening him up so far that Ansem was able to work his way in by offering the boy more power than before. Sora was forced to fight his best friend - repeatedly - even losing the Keyblade briefly in the process as Riku should have been the weilder until he let the darkness into his heart. He even briefly lost Donald and Goofy, as they obeyed the King's direction to stay with the Keyblade. Fortunately for all involved, though, the Keyblade came back to Sora, as did Donald and Goofy even before the Keyblade, and he was able to find and revive Kairi.
He briefly turned into a Heartless when he stabbed himself with Riku's Keyblade, which had been made from the six hearts of six of the Princesses of Heart, Kairi being the seventh and last needed to complete the keyhole. Kairi's heart had been trapped inside his body from the time the Islands had begun to fragment, her body trapped in something like a coma and drifting through the worlds until she was found by Captain Hook's pirate ship. Riku's Keyblade had the power to unlock hearts, so to free Kairi's heart, Sora decided to sacrifice himself. Unknowingly, freeing Kairi's heart and losing his own created a Nobody for both of them - Roxas and Namine. Sora wasn't to remain a Heartless for long, though, as he was able to retain some feeling for his friends and followed them down the levels of the Hollow Bastion castle. Kairi recognized him and protected his Heartless-form, bringing him back to himself.
Once Sora was reunited with her, he made it his personal mission to rescue Riku, who had been possessed by Ansem and had almost had his spirit killed. Riku had broken free of the darkness long enough to protect Kairi, but Ansem had taken over again when she'd gotten away and had taken Riku to the ends of the worlds. Ansem was behind this entire problem, as he was also after Kingdom Hearts, and Sora had to stop him. Leaving Kairi in Traverse Town with Leon and company, he, Donald, and Goofy set out for the final battle. It took them right back to the Islands, or a very convincing fascimile, and Sora finally defeated Ansem after several long battles. Riku was freed - but into the realm of Darkness. Kingdom Hearts was also opened, and it needed to be shut before the Heartless trapped within could swarm out. Riku - and King Mickey, who was also on the other side - helped the trio accomplish the seemingly impossible task, locking themselves into the darkness to save the worlds. Kairi suddenly appeared after the door was shut, but was just as quickly pulled away as the Islands, and all the worlds destroyed by the Heartless, began to reform in the wake of Ansem's defeat and the locking of Kingdom Hearts. Sora was able to promise that he'd return to her before they were separated.
But he wouldn't go home without Riku. Mickey had told him, Donald, and Goofy not to worry when the three of them would have risked themselves - and a Heartless invasion - to rescue their friends. He convinced them to continue by saying there would always be a door to the light. Once everything was restored, the three had no idea where they were - but they knew they would continue to search for their friends. Pluto appeared then, carrying a letter that bore the King's seal, and began leading them down a path. They gladly followed - into the next adventure of their lives, one that would, in a way, erase their lives.
While chasing Pluto, Sora was drawn onto a path by a man in a black hooded coat that led him and his friends to the door of the strangest building he'd ever seen, a castle built of strangely proportioned blocks with many towers and other things jutting off-
And his memory cuts off there. The next thing he knew, he was awakening in a white pod in a large white room after having slept for a long time and grown several inches.
What he didn't remember was everything that had happened in that castle. It was there, in Castle Oblivion, that he was first introduced to the Organization, though he didn't know what that was. Several of the members were there, with the "witch" Namine, conducting experiments on memory - with Sora, Donald, and Goofy as the test subjects. The farther they went into the castle, the more they forgot, and the more Sora began to "remember." Namine, under Marluxia's control, was taking apart Sora's memories and substituting herself in the place of Kairi, until she and Riku were the only things Sora remembered. He encountered several obstacles along the path to Namine - not the least being the Organization members themselves. Marluxia and Larxene had cultivated a plan to gain control of the Organization and planned to use Sora to clench the deal, and Larxene took Axel in confidence into their plot. Axel, however, was a double agent - he "proved" his loyalty to Marluxia by killing Vexen, one of the original members, but then turned on the traitors and tried to kill them for betraying the Organization. Sora ended up having to finish the job, but at the end of it all the only Organization member alive was Axel, and he went back to the Superior. Sora did find Namine, and she explained what she'd been forced to do, and offered Sora the option of remaining as he was and remembering her, or going back to the way he'd been and remembering everything else. He chose the latter, though he didn't want to forget her, and she put him to sleep for a year so she could restore him.
Sora had awakened in Twilight Town, a place that seemed eerily familiar, with the only clue to what happened a note in Jiminy's journal that said to thank Namine. The trio resumed their search for Riku and the King, and ended up swept into another adventure that required them to save the world, this time from the remaining half of the Organization. Headed by Xemnas, they had invaded many of the worlds again to perpitrate the Heartless and a new foe called the Nobodies, of which the Organization were the top specimens. The Organization were Nobodies that had retained their human shape and reasoning after dying - retained everything except their hearts, as a matter of fact, and wanted to remedy that and become whole again by claiming possession of Kingdom Hearts. They didn't care who got in their way in their quest; they would trample everything they had to in order to reach their goal, and Sora had to stop them before they destroyed the worlds again, which would happen if they came into possession of Kingdom Hearts. He chased them through world after world, reuniting with old friends and frequently meeting - and having to fight - the Organization members in those worlds. All that time he was also searching for Riku and Kairi, having learned that Kairi had made it off the Islands again and been kidnapped by Axel, and frequently running into King Mickey and receiving unwilling clues about Riku from him.
His chase led him to the World that Never Was, ironically because Axel had forsaken the Organization entirely and joined Sora in fighting off a horde of Nobodies in the dark realms. Axel used the last of his strength to open a portal for Sora to the Nobodies' homeworld, and it was there that Sora was reunited with Kairi and Riku, who had given up much to save his friend. He also learned the truth about a boy named Roxas, whom many of the Organization members had mistaken him for, and how Roxas had once again become a part of him just before he'd awoken. A sacrifice by the scientist DiZ restored Riku to his proper form, and the six friends pulled together to defeat Xemnas. Namine appeared one last time and opened a portal for them to the Destiny Islands, then she and Roxas were completely merged into their Somebodies at last, making all four of them whole again. Unfortunately, Sora and Riku hadn't made it through the portal before it closed, and they were forced to fight the much stronger Xemnas once again before they could finish their journey.
But in the end, they did make it home, to a place that was just as they'd left it and always would be.
Personality: Sora is, before anything else, a normal teenage boy. When you take away the Keyblade and the magic and the summons and everything else, he's essentially still the same kid he was when he was swept off the Island - loyal to his friends, good-natured, fun-loving, and determined.
There are very few people in all of the worlds that can match the amount of optimism and innate cheerfulness he has. He can get sad just like anyone else, but it's a very fleeting thing - and when he is sad, he's got good reason to be. Sora is at heart optimistic to the point of almost being blind - he didn't fully realize how "dark" Riku had gotten, after all - but with all the darkness around him and the fact that he's battling against the dark, that's not that bad a thing. Especially with Donald and Goofy (especially the duck) around to balance him out and remind him to keep his head. He likes to laugh and grin, and does both frequently. He has a goofy sense of humor that finds the fun things in just about everything and doesn't like to be bored, at all. He was a rambunctious little kid and broke plenty of things he shouldn't have, but he was also the kid it was impossible to be mad at for long because he was just way too good-natured, truthfully sorry, and cute. Especially cute.
The past quests and months of journeying have started to erase some of his naivety, though, which is for the best. He's still wildly optimistic, but not as blindly so - seeing one of his best friends possessed with arguably the greatest evil in the universe and the other as a heartless shell has a steadying effect on anyone. He still always looks to the good before the bad, but it's much easier for him to realize and acknowledge that the bad exists - and combat it accordingly.
His sense of right and wrong is larger and more absolute than most people's. Sora cannot, in any way, stand for injustice - if something is wrong, he's going to fix it. Period. He will always back the underdog, he'll defect to the losing team (unless the losing team is evil and all that), and he gives all his money to bag ladies. There is almost nothing he won't do to improve someone else's lot in life. It does, of course, depend on who the person is, but he will try. He's always willing to jump into a fight to help someone else out, for example.
He's self-confident almost to a fault. His best friends are both people that have plenty of self-confidence in themselves and their abilities, and pretty much all of it perfectly well-founded. He didn't develop his own self-confidence to keep up with them, but the three of them bolstered each other - and put Riku and Sora into a constant friendly competitiveness. Everything was a game for them, a game to be won, and they simply had fun that way before the Heartless came. If there's ever a contest in anything, Sora will want to enter and be confident that he can win. He won't even stop to ask for permission first. He also acknowledges the possibility that he could fail at something, but he pretty much believes he won't. He's an "everything'll work out fine" type of person, and he wouldn't be him if he wasn't.
Sora has more determination than any three random people. When he's decided to do something, he will not stop until it is done. Of course that doesn't necessarily apply to schoolwork or cleaning his room, but he doesn't really mind that. He's an average student, but loves to play sports and have fun, and is almost never found indoors. He is not techno-savvy.
He also loves the water. Being raised on an archepelago meant that he could swim before he could walk, as parents didn't want their kids to wander into the water on accident and drown. Sora still loves to swim and has skill at handling small boats and various types of sailing craft; almost everyone on the Islands has their own to get from place to place, like their world's version of bicycles. He's more at home in worlds that have water of some sort than any other. Even when he's half-fish.
Strengths: Sora is the Keyblade Master. Not the only one, and it looks like not the first, but the most visible and arguably the most important. He’s the one that’s gone through the worlds setting everything to rights, locking the Keyholes and defeating the Heartless with the help of Donald and Goofy. With all of that responsibility comes a few perks: his possession of the Keyblade is an obvious one, meaning that he has the strength of heart to wield it. Of course in Luceti he can't get to it, but it still means Sora has a strong heart that won't compromise what he believes in.
He's also very compassionate. While it's not impossible for him to hold a grudge (especially against people that keep attacking him and his friends) or for him to hate someone, he honestly believes in giving the benefit of the doubt and can't help doing it, even in horribly unusual circumstances such as with Maleficent.
All those years of playing on the Isles and all that fighting he's had to do on his journey have left him strong and quick in combat, and he's pretty good at it even without the keyblade.
Weaknesses: Sora can be too trusting. He isn’t the best at telling if someone’s lying to him or trying to trick him, and so tends to take things at face value. This doesn’t mean he’s not intelligent, but he’s just never had the need to learn or recognize deception. Even in his travels, the sides were always cut-and-dry: it was obvious who the villains were, and just as obvious who was on his side. He’s very lucky that he has friends like Donald and Goofy with him, as the three of them are loyal to each other almost beyond anything else. Since being tossed off the Islands by the dark maelstrom, he’s gained a little more of an edge - and lost some of his innocence as well - but for the most part it’s still right there. He can also be too quick to forgive, honestly believing that the good in people will overcome the bad eventually. That trait has had some almost disastrous results in the past when he let Riku go the first time they’d been reunited.
At times, he can also be entirely oblivious. He’s one of those people that can miss the forest for the trees, and will sometimes need the obvious pointed out to him. His want to do right and help his friends can sometimes trample over his common sense. Also, he knows intellectually that not everyone is as open or as good-natured as he, but he has trouble truly believing it, leading him to not see if a friend is having problems sometimes.
One of his best traits is also one of his worst. Sora has a very strong sense of justice and an intense need to do what's right - but he hasn't yet (and probably never will) learned to back away from a situation. If there's something going wrong, no matter what it is, Sora is going to stop and try and set things right, no matter what else he's supposed to be doing at the time. In and of itself it's an admirable trait, but it can also delay him from doing things that he needs to and only he can do, make him late to places he needs to be, and means that something else can go wrong elsewhere because he wasn't around to stop it. He's slowly learning that it can be best to just let people take care of their own problems sometimes, but it's a very slow lesson in coming.

First Person: Why is there a book here in the middle of nowhere? What is- ow! Man these stupid wings keep getting in the way, I keep hitting them on things...
...Why is the book yelling at me? Hello? [The sound of rapping on the journal.]
Okay, so this isn't the craziest place I've ever been. But what happened to my clothes? Why can't I get the keyblade? That only happened once and Riku doesn't need to take mine anymore. Huh, maybe this really is the craziest place I've been.
Anybody I know around? Hello? Riku? Kairi? Donald?
...Is there some place to eat?
Third Person: This was beginning to feel like some sort of sick joke. Exactly how many times in his life was he supposed to wake up with the extremely weird feeling of never having seen this place before and with no idea how he got there? Wasn't this the third? Or had he lost count?
This wasn't the Isles. Sora was smelling - and tasting, ugh - dirt, dust, and rocks, and there was wind blowing almost constantly above his head. Pushing himself up onto his knees only made the confusion worse as he stared at the mountains rising above him and realized he actually had no idea where he was. All right, there were worlds he hadn't been to on his journey, so maybe it was one of them. But he'd finally been settled back home so how did he get there?
"Hello?" The mountains caught his yell and threw it back at him, and Sora scrubbed at his face - with bare hands. What? Where were his gloves? Waitaminute, where was his shirt? His shoes? Anything of his! The pants weren't even his pj's!
"Okay, okay, don't panic, you've done this before." Sora didn't normally talk to himself, but while he was pretty used to the world-jumping thing, he wasn't at all used to waking up away from any sort of town and looking like the victim of a hospital robbery. Someone's gotta know what's going on, so find a town, find some clothes, find Riku or Kairi or Donald or Goofy or King- "Ow!"
Sora'd ended up backing into a rock - and smashing those new wings pretty painfully. Wincing, he reached behind him, getting more and more confused as he felt the battered feathers. He'd been a merman, a lion, and ridiculously tiny - but the wings were definitely a first.
"...Okay, what?"
