Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End
Name: Captain Jack Sparrow
Age: 35
Physical Description of Character: Jack is not a tall man, but what he lacks in height, he exudes in his fiery personality. His skin is tanned from his many days on the open waves, and his hair shows signs of being damaged by the salty air and other environmental oddities that have happened to cross his path. It reaches his upper back, and is decorated with oddly places braids, a bandana, and, because Jack would not be Jack without it, his hat.
On his skin, there are further marks of where he has traversed. At least two tattoos decorate his skin; one of them the infamous sparrow which is a representation of his namesake. The other, is the traditional skull and crossbones, but it is generally hidden from prying eyes. As a last reminder of his past run ins with authority, he bears a burned mark right below the sparrow tattoo. This mark is the mark of the EITC (East India Trading Company).
As far as facial features are concerned, Jack is a handsome fellow (even through all of that muck and dirt). He has dark brown eyes, which are more often than not outlined in kohl. It is an old method to protect one’s eyes from the blinding light of the sun.
The last, somewhat remarkable pieces on his body are located on his hands. His rings are unique, and while he probably stole most of them, they do distinguish him from just about any other pirate in practice.
Point in Canon: After he is released from Davy Jones's Locker.
Personality: Detached in an odd manner, unless it involves his own demise, Jack seems to not care about anyone but himself. That first impression is exceedingly misleading. Jack cares about what he wants to care about, and friends mark high on his list of those he does not want to see killed or otherwise harmed. However, when it comes to his own safety and freedom, he will often take flight. But, he always comes back.
This shallow façade does not dissipate in matters of the romantic sort, either. Jack is, perhaps, completely shallow when it comes to women. He uses, discards, and then tries to pull the charm card at a later date.
It is hard to say what Jack was like before he became a pirate, but certainly he was a man on the edge. He has remained on that edge: somewhere between madness and sanity. When his beloved Pearl was sank for the first time, whatever thread of propriety he had within him snapped. That thread has remained broken, yet there are glimpses of his past life in his speech and how he deals with authoritative figures.
Ultimately, Jack likes to play the games life likes to send his way. He will take all he can, give nothing (or very little) back and take off at a moment's notice when one part of the game starts to become too dangerous and/or boring. In other words, I wouldn't count on Jack to be steadfast in anything but his rum consumption.
History of the Character: Not much is known about Captain Jack Sparrow before he arrived in Port Royal, but his father is known: Captain Teague. As this man was a trusted pirate, it can be assumed that Jack was not raised by him. (Simply because in his late teens, he chose to join the EITC under Cutler Beckett.)
This job was ideal for Jack. He was surrounded by ships, which had always been a dear love of his, especially when they were in full sail. Not only was he surrounded, but he also got to leave England and see the rest of the world. Who could ask for better benefits to a sailor at heart?
Everything was going along swimmingly between employee and employer until Jack was asked to transport slaves to the New World. This was an act that he considered so heinous that he was willing to give up his position to ensure it never transpired on the ship under his control: The Wicked Wench. Stealing the ship, he halfway expected some form of retaliation. What he was NOT expecting was for Cutler Beckett to sink his beloved, newly Christened Black Pearl into the grimy deep.
That, unfortunately, is what happened. Near death or perhaps knocking on its door, Jack met Davy Jones. They made a pact that if Jones raised his ship from the depths, and allowed Jack to be pirate for thirteen years, Jack would enter Jones’ service without complaint.
Some years later, Jack arrived in Port Royal aboard a swiftly sinking vessel that had belonged to the Piratetess Anamarie. However, once on land, he quickly got himself into trouble by trying to commandeer one of the Navy’s ships. Seemingly captured, he evaded the Officials until being cornered in a Blacksmith’s Shop, where he was knocked out and transported to a cell in jail.
Circumstances being what they were, after HIS Black Pearl arrived to terrorize the city, Jack was commissioned by one William Turner (son of his previous friend “Bootstrap” Bill Turner) to aide him in saving his love, Elizabeth Swann. None too happy about the goal, but amply ready to show his deceased friend some respect and see what this boy was made of, Jack helped Will commandeer the fastest ship the Navy had in Port, and took off on the open waters.
Both chasing and avoiding the Black Pearl, the story of the Cursed Aztec Gold made it’s rounds, and the cave on the island of death was revealed to them. It was there that the final show down between Jack and his previous, mutinous First Mate transpired. Through witty remarks and maneuvers, Jack, Will and Elizabeth, along with Commodore Norrington and his Navy Officers were able to put the Gold to rest, and kill Captain Hector Barbossa.
Even with that, Jack was scheduled for his hanging that he had missed previously. Will helped him escape, and Jack saw Will and Elizabeth united, jaggedly cutting her ties to Commodore Norrington. The newly reappointed Captain was not overly enthused by the events, one way or another, but he is quoted as saying “he rooted for the Commodore”, whatever that means.
Hopping over the wall separating the Port from the sea, he landed in the water below, where he was picked up by the crew he had organized in Tortuga to help him bring the Black Pearl and Elizabeth back into his grasp. Well, not Elizabeth into his grasp, but you get the point.
Once more, Jack was Captain of his beloved Pearl.
During the time between his escape from Port Royal and his stealing of the piece of fabric from the Pirate Prison, Jack had become aware of a very severe problem. And, no, its name was not James Norrington. No, his time allotted to him by Davy Jones was running out, and fast.
Thus his newest mission is to find Davy Jones' heart and hold it for ransom/stab it in order to save himself from becoming apart of the Kraken's intestines.
