i was thinking contrail too, but, what kind of plane shoots straight up or straight down?

maybe i should send these to my cousin who is a commercial jet pilot and see if he recognises it :)

no, it's only about 200 mm - i think that's analog equivalent - my camera is the sony f828, with a 7x optical zoom on a carl zeiss lens. so... good quality (though there's some barreling and occassional chromatic aberrations on some sharp contrasting lines), but limited.

oh, and, the upper photo is the zoomed one - the lower pic is merely a close crop. :)
