I was just looking at your profile to see if an e-mail address was listed. In doing so, I saw that one of your interests is 'Anthony Bourdain'. I'm sure he's an asshole to work with in a kitchen, but I love the books of his that I've read.
Reason I wanted to e-mail? I just caught 'Jonestown' on 'The American Experience' on PBS and I'm not sure how to react. Have you seen it? I know I'm going to have really weird dreams tonite. I think it's the saddest story, even sadder than the holocaust, that I've ever heard. I thought of you because I think you might have known some of the people.

i'm actually recording it right now because i'm not feeling up to watching it at the moment - too heavy - but i was sent an email last week from one of my old teachers, who had taught several of the teenagers there, telling me the show would be coming out and to watch for it. she gave me a little background info on some of the people featured.
i've been thinking a lot about jonestown lately, and its effect on me personally through my school (which was called "the people's temple school" as 50 percent of our student body were temple kids) - definitely part of the experiences i had that made me distrust all organised religion plus new age-ism. it was all mixed up together, and all fucked up together, in my mind.

What bothers me about the story, and what makes me feel it is so sad, is that there was a lot of genuine hope offered through the People's Temple. People who were members, who lost relatives there, including Jim Jones, Jr., still feel that they had the potential to make a better world. It just went so wrong. There were signs along the way that indicated that there was something wrong with Jim Jones, but people ignored them because they were so committed and somewhat brainwashed. I would say you have very good reason not to trust organized religion. I can't imagine what that time must have been like for you, especially as a kid
