The Day After...Thoughts? (Spoilers!)

So, how are we all feeling after last night's...interesting finale?

I watched the episode twice, and after crying the ugly cry and moaning and cursing Peter Jackson and Aidan Turner's names...I'm okay.

No, seriously, I'm okay with how this series ended because, to me, it was the only way to go and what the series was leading up to. I began to think of the man Mitchell was in series one- a flawed but ultimately moral man who happened to be a vampire who found his home and family with a werewolf and a ghost- to the Mitchell of series three- a vampire who had become a desperate, pathetic mess, willing to do whatever it took to be with the woman he loved, with his inner self broken and his relationships destroyed beyond repair.

Mitchell as we knew him was gone. As soon as he told Annie in the beginning that he was tired and wanted to rest, I knew it. And I think Annie figured it out as soon as she saw Mitchell trying to bargain with Herrick and do his whole "I'll side with whomever" spiel and admitting that the group would never be the same again. He was fighting to survive for Annie and in a much bigger sense, just to survive. He knew he would "relapse" eventually. And George knew it. So did Annie. It was a mercy killing to save the last bit of humanity Mitchell had left.

Ultimately, in this last series, I think even as Mitchell was doing wrong things and trying to survive, he showed just how human he was. He was scared, he was in love, he was desperate, he was angry, he was cowardly and brave. And by the end, he was tired and just done.

To me, Mitchell's story was over. His relationships were destroyed by his own hand, he was becoming less human in his desperation. The boxcar massacre sealed his fate, eventually, it would've caught up with him and clearly, it did. And he found redemption through this suicide/mercy killing. He left behind his family, but he was at peace with it, he was ready to rest. He had a family, got to choose the way he left this earth. and a great love to see him through- most people aren't so lucky.

I'm glad George was the one to do it. George and Mitchell's relationship was arguably the central and most important relationship of the show and it just worked. Mitchell would never have allowed Annie to do it, and after three series, George was strong enough to do so. He showed Mitchell love and mercy in the final act and between George and Annie, Mitchell had more love and respect than some would argue he deserved. As much as I wanted this series- as one series or as a whole- to end with the four of them watching tv and eating pizza, it wasn't going to happen. Life is beautiful and tragic and the finale showed both sides of the coin.

So where does that leave the three without their Mitchell? They no longer have him for protection. Annie is fated to be more powerful than she knows, and George has shown just how strong he can be. Now they're going to have to move on without their personal security blanket. They'll have to get the strength and power in themselves that Mitchell had provided and they'll have to fend for themselves. It's like a child or spouse having to live on after their parent/love dies. Their true strength will now be tested without Mitchell there.

...and I'm kind of intrigued to see where George and Annie- and to a lesser extent, Nina- go. Will they become as desperate to survive as Mitchell? Will they lose their humanity to survive or retain it? How will they move forward with a huge piece of their puzzle missing? Mitchell's absence WILL be felt, I have no doubts about it.

Series-wise, I think if series four happens, it has to be the final series. Mitchell's death is the beginning of the end. And in regards to Annie, I think Mitchell's death is the beginning of HER end. This next series will probably be her finally reaching her full potential and finally crossing over.

I can only hope that in the end, like has been said by many wonderful people in this community, that the series ends with Annie doing a voiceover about being human and living as she walks through her door- after making sure George would be all right?- and Mitchell is there waiting for her. George getting his dream- a family- and Annie being at peace with Mitchell in the afterlife is perhaps the most perfect ending this show could have, in my opinion. Life is hard and tragic, but it's also beautiful and full of love.

I'm sorry if I rambled, I feel like I was all over the place. What do you guys think?
