That nostalgia is hitting ... hard

Okay, so work has been overly hectic this year, which means that at the end of November I found myself with 10 open vacation days left. And now I'm at home until christmas with time to chill, watch tv and read. I don't know why exactly I decided to watch the trilogy. Maybe it's because in this day and age of endless content scrolling and Netflix ( Read more... )

Yep, nostalgia. We had great time in fandom 10-15 years ago. But circumstances change, people change, times change - all the time. That's just how life works. Things come and go.
But you know what? We have memories. And even more - we can not-talk for years, and then, when we do meet and talk, we can do that like all those years of separation didn't happen, we can just go on from where we stopped. Don't you agree? 😊

I absolutely agree! I think I'm just feeling mellow ... and to a passionate reader like me it feels especially sad how many of the old archives are lost and with them so many stories. People poured their heart and soul into them and they're lost forever. Makes me sad.

In the end, only the memories remain, and that makes it bittersweet.

(I'm very glad though that I have a lot of old favourites saved. So whenever the mood strikes, I can go and read them. That's pretty neat.)

as long as those people and stories are saved both in our memories and computers - nothing is lost forever 💜

Hello! So glad to see you're alive and well. :)

It's amazing to me, too, that it's been 20 years since the movies came out and we were all in the heyday of the fandom. I don't write LOTR fic currently, but sometimes the nostalgia hits and I pull out old WIPs and wonder if I can get back into it. I'd have to try to re-read the books and re-watch the movies and re-acquaint myself with everything again, and I'm not sure that's a lightning bolt I can recapture in a bottle again, which is bittersweet, for sure.

But it's definitely fun to revisit the fandom from time to time.

Let me tell you ... I'm just in the process of going down that rabbit hole. Watching the movies made me crave the old stories and I'm definitely on a binge (I have a lot of old favourites saved, so plenty of reading material). Like you, I have a ton of unfinished stories on my harddrive, 3 pages here and 4 pages there - I even have good old notebooks lying around with scraps of stories. And the thing is: If I could find the time and energy, I could finish those, because I only started writing when I had the general outline of the story. I have many story beginnings on my harddrive - and I know how they all end :) Who cares if no one wants to read them nowadays. As long as I enjoy writing them it's all in good fun.

We'll see.
