You would think half a million people protesting cuts would make Torys stop and think about what they are doing.

But no, they are jumping ahead with plans cut taxes for the rich instead. This is literally cutting taxes for the richest 1% of individualsHow can they imagine they can justify this?

This seems not to be one of their brighter moments.

Maybe they hope all the press round the march will distract people?

Oh, I bet that's it, actually. Trying to bury unpopular news.

I mean, it's not quite the case that reducing the top tax rate is always a mistake -- in some cases it could increase tax revenue. But is a marginal rate of 50% really that much?

Will be interesting to see if anything comes of their implied plans for taxes on expensive properties; if done well and at a level that combined with the income tax cut was budget-neutral, I could even prefer this change. But I'm worried that it will be quietly forgotten.

With their stated emphasis currently on saving money, it seems very odd to announce something that lower the money in to the government while hinting at something that (might, in some cases) balance.
Surely it would have been better to do them simultaneously, or the increasing money in one first.
